SE/AE question

Ok, I know this has probably been asked several times but guess I was lazy and didn't look through archives. After thinking on it for a while, I want to paint my JD tractor using Acrylic enamel with maybe a coat of clearcoat instead of the synthetic enamel. My question is this. I started painting my parts last July and haven't done anything with them since. I used the JD dealership paint synthetic enamel with hardener in paint. I really didn't want to have to go back and strip paint off castings or hood if I could paint over it and maybe use a sealer underneath. This tractor will show/parade only and it is stored inside of my shop. I did sandblast, use phosphoric acid, and PPG epoxy primer. Any advice on this please.
Thanks again for your help.

If you are satisfied with the alkyd enamel finish, and you keep it inside, finish it with the same paint and paint your next tractor with acrylic urethane (better paint than acrylic enamel at not much more cost). Clearcoat over acrylic enamel won't help much. If you want clear, then use the base coat-clearcoat system.

Thanks for the information. This is the only show tractor I wanted to do right so I really would like it to look good. Can I use the acrylic urethane over the existing synthetic enamel if I scuffed it some and put a sealer on top before applying the urethane? The paint has been dry since last July with the hardener in it and would like to go from this point forward using the better paint but didn't know if I had to strip everything all the way down to bare metal. I know that would be the better way but was just wondering. Thanks again for your help.

I can't answer that question because I have never tried it. In theory you probably can. But, when I lay out that kind of money for paint, I start with bare metal. And, if you did a good job with the alkyd, you might not be able to tell the difference. The appearance of paint, with the possible exception of base-clear, is as much technique as it is quality. Longevity is more related to quality.

I agree with CNKS. Finish up with the same as you've been useing. If after a few yrs it starts hazing or loses its appeal , then sand it and paint it with what you want. It will be cured by then and WILL accept a better finish over top. No you won't have to strip it if you wait a couple yrs. Get it done and enjoy it for a while. You can always re-do it later.
