I am about to buy a dodge diesel truck. The guy had it repainted and the guy that did it screwed him over. The paint is kinda on the poor side. It has been about 6 months since it was painted. I was wondering if I lightly wet sanded it, if it would improve its appearance? Does anybody have any wet sanding experience?

if you have never wet sanded and bufffed before, you may be better off to have your local body shop do it for you. prolly run you a couple hundred dollars and get it done right. if you dont have the materials, you will dang near spend that much on supplies, 3 pads, 3 compounds, sandpaper, and a buffer.

Can you wet sand? Depends on how much paint was applied whether is base/ clear coat or acrylic enamel. Can you define the term "kinda on the poor side"? I will assume you mean finish texture or heavy orange peel. I"ve done more than my share of color sanding, well before clear coats were factory. You can color sand enamel with excellant results but you always run the chance of sanding or polishing thru unless you know how much paint was sprayed on.

First thing first: Is the paint a base coat/clear coat finish or a enamel? If it is an enamel and has a metallic finish you can not wet sand and buff it. If it is anything else you can wet sand it. Start with 1500 or 2000 grit then what I like to do is sand it quick with 3000 grit alittle it will buff back alot easier. It probably will not buff easy because it is 6 monthes old. If the paint is that bad you might be better off and sand the whole truck with 1000 grit and reclear it that way you know it is done right!

Everything said above , plus. Have you given any thought to what you are going to do AFTER you are done wet sanding? What you are wanting to attempt here will make the art of actually painting seem like child's play in comparison. I will hazzard a good guess that the truck is a metallic and that it is NOT clear coated. That being the case , don't bother trying to get someone else to do it. If they are smart they won't. If you sand into the high metallic or pearl you will "streak" it and even though you can buff it back to shine , it will have a mottled look and will not weather very well because you have now removed the minute coat of clear that floats over the metallic and gives it the UV protection and seals over the flakes to keep out the elements. Single stage metallic and to a lesser extent , solid color paint was never meant to be sanded and buffed..
