I have heard that Oven cleaner will work really well on getting all the grit grime, and the loose to semi- loose paint off of the tractor.... any feed back about this method?

I also use a Red Devil Lye solution. Mix 3 bottles of lye in about 40 gallons of water in a 55 gallon plastic drum. Works great. After hosing the part off I no longer air dry it. I wipe it dry as possible and then immediately treat it with Phosphoric Acid to prevent rusting. The parts rust very fast otherwise.

When you pour the lye in the container add it slowly while stirring otherwise it goes to the bottom in a cake. HOWEVER, WEAR A GOOD RESPIRATOR. I am recovering from lung bronchial tube inflamation from my last good mixing job with no respirator last week. There seems to be no smell or fumes and you realize it when you can't get your breath an hour later and are debating on calling 911. Gained a lot of respect for my lye vat the last 4 days! Still is hard to beat for gunk and old paint.

I have used oven cleaner with good results on some cast iron parts that had 50 years worth of crud on them. Scrape off as much as you can with a putty knife and you may have to use a couple of applications of oven cleaner.

Most oven cleaner is a lye solution that can be sprayed on. I use it to clean carburators. When I am redoing a tractor I make a solution of lye and water in a 30 gal. plastic drum and suspend any part that will fit. In a few hours a garden hose will rinse off all grease, dirt and paint. It`s a very easy way to clean up parts. It`s very caustic to aluminum, so on those parts don`t leave it on long.

You can get lye (usually the RED DEVIL brand) at any good hardware store, preferably not a chain store.
