In the final stages of preparing my 1961 4010D for painting. Have her just about fully sanded to bare metal throughout. No doubt it has been quite long, long, long task but she is about done.

After the sanding is done, I"ll clean the shop area real well and move over my home-grown paint booth. Then the 4010 will be wiped over several times with a wax/degreaser.

After the wax/degreaser is done, I"ll be shooting PPG Epoxy Primer and then top coating with PPG Concept. I"ve already done this with the yellow parts and they turned out exceptional.

Now...my question/thought is whether or not I should or could add a clear top coat to the PPG Concept. I realize that Concept is a single stage but would it hurt to put on a PPQ Clear Coat over top for extra protection? Tractor isn"t going to be a parade tractor....she"ll be used but I figured that a little extra protection cannot hurt. Or can it?

If you are going to spend that kind of money, use the base-clear system--I have not compared the cost but I bet it's not much different.

Clearing a single stage urethane will provide better UV protection and add some "depth" to the final result. The question you need to answer is how much value that additional clear will bring to you.

As a general rule, the clear element in a single stage urethane paint is about a half mil thick, while the clear element of a multi-stage urethane paint system is about 2 mils thick. The benefit? The "thicker" (if you can call a couple mils thick) will perform much better in the UV protection department than the single stage urethane. This is the reason many people, myself included, advocate the base coat/clear coat process over the single stage.

With that said, many folks don't need, nor want, to spend a lot of money for urethane paints for their tractors. If you're going to, and money isn't a huge issue for you, and you like the idea of having more UV protection from the added clear, then I say go for it. Just make sure to follow the P-sheets for both products when you do.

It certainly is not going to hurt anything. In fact, it is permitted by the Concept tech sheet. As long as you use one of the compatible clears noted on that tech sheet and apply in the stated time window, you should be good to go. I've never cleared Concept but I have cleared OMNI MTK single stage because I believe doing so provides a better appearance for cut vinyl decals. It tends to smooth the rather sharp decal edges and gives a more "painted on" appearance. It also provides some protection for the decal itself.

Remember however, that applying two or three coats of clear when it is not necessary for gloss presents additional opportunities for something to get messed up in the application process. That could require possible repair work afterwards if it occurs. Not to mention the additional expense of some fairly expensive materials. Deltron clears are not inexpensive by any means. Nothing in the Deltron line is, including Concept.
