like cnks said, you gotta follow the mfr's directions on thinning/reducing paint. especially if you are first learning. the valspar isnt a bad paint to work with, and for a beginner you can get good results, its not of the same quality as an automotive paint, but your cost is considerably lower.if you are going to shoot the valspar, i'd recommend you use the hardner. use appropriate saftey stuff. generally the valspar's ie, alkyd enamels get thinned up to a max of 10%, usually with naptha or mineral spirits. be sure to stir it good when mixing, it seems too thick as you add thinner and then all of a sudden, bang way too thin!! here is my 42 m in valspar (farm and fleet brand)

Read, and follow exactly the directions on the can or spec sheet--if the directions are missing or incomplete (most are on the cheaper paint), use a quality brand such as PPG or DuPont. The fade resistance and durability depend on whether it is alkyd enamel, acrylic enamel, or urethane. Fade resistance and cost go up in the order presented.
