Question guys - my 44 jd b is going to need new tires. i am going to paint my wheels. would i be better to replace and mask the new tires and paint, or remove and paint the rims, then put new tires on. just trying to keep the newly painted rims from getting all scratched up. please give me your opinions.

Just a tip... I use a piece of aluminum house flashing and slide it into the crevice between the tire and the rim to do my touchup work. It's about 8 inches long and I just work my way around the bead of the tire. Alot faster than taping.

Hey Jon, Here's what I did. I took the tires off and had the wheels sandblasted becuase of rust. I then painted the inside of the rim with epoxy primer and black acrylic urethane. Had the tire put back on, masked the tire and primed and painted them. I did it this way because I didn't want to scratch the paint. Some extra work, but the wheels look great.

If you do it the other way around.. and mount first.. use tire soap and apply it with a brush carefully at the bead.. then wash off after paint cured.. ( comes in buckets at napa.. )

Jon, I sand blast the rims and paint , then mount and then touch up. If you are careful and use Pam cooking spray, (the stuff your wife uses to keep things from sticking) on the tire bead they slip on fairly easy. If you have time to let the paint cure good before you start to mount the tires there's hardly any chipping. I use big rubber hammer so NO chipping. Good luck. Don
