I recently purchased some new decals for a John Deere 180 lawn tractor. Without going back to the dealer for directions, how best to install them?
The side decals are long for the hood. Do I wet the surface, or soak the decal? Do I install them dry? How can I keep them straight? Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

The site mentioned below doesn't even mention the wet method. Being new to this, you should check some different sites too. I have applied everything from Trans-Am hood birds to wood grain on mini-vans with compound angles and the only way to do these is the water method.Small decals I do dry because it's quicker but if I were just learning,I would definately go wet unless for some reason the supplier prohibited it.Clean the area surgically, spray bottle of water with 3 or 4 drops of liquid soap (mild),completely wet surface and back of decal after backing is removed.Place decal on surface and position it.Start from the center and work out with a soft plastic squeegy. It will only stick where you squeegy the water out.Don't go too fast and trap bubbles.Slowly squeegy water out towards the edges until all bubbles are gone and decal is smooth when you look across it.Then take a dry soft rag and wipe over it and if you want, use a hair dryer on low and no closer than 12" for a couple minutes and wipe with the rag again. Or just let it set in the sun for a while. Good luck

B---,

The link provided is for cut vinyl decals, not mylar ones. I suspect that is why wet application is not mentioned - because it's not recommended. The cut vinyl type (more expensive) is typically used on tractor main hood decals in the better sets. The letters are actually individual decals, separate from each other. There is no clear material between or around them. They are installed dry as the link indicates. The adhesive used is exceptionally strong. You do not want to use any type of wet application method with these decals in anticipation of shifting them around a little after they are down. That's why the detailed instructions for application alignment are in the link. The individual letters are held in the proper alignment with each other by the top "application mask", which is carefully removed after the letters are down and adhered to the surface. I think the type of decals you are referring to are the mylar ones that are applied wet, especially the larger ones. The application method depends on the actual type of decals he has. His decal set may even contain both types. My AC-B set was that way. The main hood decals were cut vinyl and the remainder were mylar. The mylar ones were small enough that there was no particular advantage to a wet application although they could have been applied wet if that was desired. If any of his decals have both a wax paper backing and an application mask that is only partially opaque, I suspect those are the vinyl ones and should be applied dry as the link indicates. If only a wax paper backing is present, I expect those would be the typical mylar variety and could be applied wet or dry - wet permitting some position adjustment after they are down. At least that's my understanding of it all and the way I applied decals on my B.
