I am hoping to have my Minneapolis Moline UTE mechanically restored this summer and will be looking for some one to paint it for me. It needs very little body work. How much can I expect to be charged for sandblasting and painting?

I have painted two tractors so far and have another one lined up for the summer (Allis Chalmers WC) I paid near $200 each to have two of them sandblasted, about a year apart. Sandblasting just requires that you take time to take everything apart, (EXCEPT MOTOR AND TRANNY-REAR END) leave motor through the rear end together as sand will get into these parts, and plug the holes with rags. TAke time to make sure rags are in every hole. Duct tape any metal serial # tags two or three times, and then take an exacto knife and cut around the tags to make sure all the tag is covered but nothing else. I have paid anywhere between $20-$100 for paint. I charged $200 for painting a tractor for another fellow.

$200 for sandblaster
$20-$100 a gallon for paint
$20-$100 a gallon for primer (DO NOT MIX AND MATCH PAINT AND PRIMER)
$200 to be painted

= $440(+)-$600(+)
These costs are just what I figured to have paid to paint two that I did

The cost is going to be in the quality of the prep work done, and the type of paint used. First you have to ask yourself, what do you want to spend, what type of finish do you want. You could easily spend 1000 dollars and not be satisfied with the quality of work.

I completely disassembled my tractor, sandblasted it, and painted all the parts individually. Lots of work, but well worth the time and effort. Since your tractor is already running and assembled, I would talk to a couple of auto body shops that have a good track record to get an idea of what it will cost. Best way to for a rate is by the hour, so the job is done right.

You could also try an classic car restoration shop like Jimmy's CRC in Shakopee, MN. They do first class job all way.

I would not sandblast the tractor because you have it in running condition. I'd only sandblast the parts I could take off, because that sand gets in everywhere.

Lots of negative comments about sand getting into even the tinest opening and leaving sand behind to ruin bearings and etc. I had one of mine blasted and never again. Have it stripped anyother way. Check archives about sandblasting. Frank

Find an Honest Man and Pay by hour. Will have better job and be much cheaper. I always worked cheaper by hour and will NOT let anybody work by contract. Contracting breeds dishonesty.

Bill it's hard to put a price on something one hasn't seen. But as a rule of thumb 1000 to 1200 would cover the prep, paint and decals. You would pay for any other expenses.Wiring, gages, tires etc.I've painted 100's of tractors and you should be ready to spend about 2000 total. But like I said it's hard to tell over the net.

There are some places that change ridiculously high prices to paint tractors. My suggestion would be to not go to a body shop, because they will probably be high. I got my JD A painted about five years ago for 650. That was with some body work, rewiring the whole tractor, paint, decals, hardener. They guy did a fantastic job out of his shop. He has painted around 200 tractors and enjoys doing it. He doesn't sandblast though because he has ruined too many tractors doing it, but I think he did an excellent job. Question, where exactly are you located?

I live in Northfield, MN. I have done some checking around and I'm having a tough time finding someone who will commit to a price. I have even asked them to quote me without any body work.
