I have just brought home a model A Avery tractor with a Hercules flat head 4 cyl. I need to know the firing order of that engine. The timing marks on the flywheel do not line up with the top of the piston stroke on number 1 cylinder. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Shawn

Are you sure your on the compression stroke, not the exhaust? I suppose it's possible someone has had the flywheel off, and put it back on 180 degrees off. We also need to know if yours is equipped with mag, or distributor. If it's a mag and someone has had the governor apart, it's possible that they got the drive gear out of time. That would not explain why you don't have no. 1 TDC when you line up the flywheel marks though.

That mark on the flywheel should show up when either #1 or #4 is at TDC (or top dead center) since those 2 cylinders are one full turn apart from one another in the firing order. The order is 1243 as the other fellow mentioned. Do you have the head off or are you just doing it by feeling with a wire, etc.? Can't even guess why the mark isn't showing up. What is at TDC when the mark does show in the inspection hole?
