Sounds like you've got a 1947 model there. The 47's started with serial number 9A and the 48's started with serial number 13A. The first number changed every 1000 tractors. It could have been a Montgomery Wards version of the model A Avery since the serial numbers just continued along the way as they were made, no matter whose decal went on. Most of them of course were Avery A's. If you email me on the above link, I'll email you back a copy of a little history page I've made up on that series of tractors.

The Montgomery Wards Twin Row had a separate serial # on a tin plate added to show that it is a Wards Twin Row,the plate is on the right side frame rail on the side below the stamped Avery seriel #.

That's good information to know, so those MW's had two different serial numbers then. I'll add that bit of information to my history page. I guess that was one way of distinguishing them. I know the Cletrac General GG's distributed here in Canada by Massey Harris had a Massey Harris ID Tin Plate on the right frame rail (near the front by the engine), but I don't believe there was a serial number on it, just the fact that MH was the distributor.

Don't get confused between the early Twinrows, and the later Avery A's. The early tractors had their serial numbers on the aluminum plate on the right side rail at the rear. The tractors were well identified on this plate whether it was a Cletrac General, Montgomery Wards Twinrow, Massey Harris General, or CO-OP. They were also painted different colors. The later tractors (around 1942) had their serial numbers stamped in the top of the channel, at the right rear of the frame rail. This coinsides with when BF Avery took over manufacturing. These tractors were for the most part all painted the tar tar red. Many of these were sold through Wards, but still wore their BF Avery decals, and paint. Some of the Early Avery A's sold through Wards (1942-1945ish) did wear Wards Twinrow decals. Given yours is a 1947, it most likely had the BF Avery decals on the hood, but still could have been sold through Montgomery Wards. I have never seen a tractor with both stamped serial number in frame, and serial number aluminum plate. If there is such a thing, I would be interested in hearing more about it.
