We recently bought a 1950's Springfield riding mower. Don't know anything about it. It runs but can't seem to get it into gear. Does anyone have any information about Springfields and if so, what's the story on getting it into gear. Thanks for any help you can provide. Pat Harry

I purchased some property with a polebarn on it. In the polebarn is a Springfield riding mower/tractor. It doesn't have the standard round steering wheel, but rather the steering device is set up like bicycle handlebars. It is green and white in color. I believe that the number 4 is printed on the side below the word Springfield. Can anyone tell me about this Springfield -- year it was built, whether it's a collector's/antique item or what. BTW, mine does not run -- I know it sat for several years unused in the polebarn. I'd appreciate any assistance I can get.

Thanks in advance.

I have a 50's Springfield. Does it lock up when you put it in gear? If it does, it's probably got a broken spring behind one of the balls that holds the shifting forks in place and it is in two gears at the same time. If it just will not shift from nuetral to one side or the other, it may have rust on the 2 rods that the shifting forks slide on in the transmission. Let me know if you have any other questions. jlettell@indiana.edu

I also have a Springfield Riding Tractor. Have replaced the engine with a 6hp Briggs. Runs good and shifts good with a lot of work on the belt set up. Take a little tlc on the idleler pulley and belts. Did not have the mower apparatis under so we just use it around the house and for pullinf a barrell train. Still looking for any other info on it though ie:parts or owners manuels
