My Satoh 550 overheats when using a 5 foot finish mower. The radiator and water pump seem to be fine and the tractor seems to run fine otherwise. Running it with the hood off seems to prevent the overheating. Any advice on what to try next would be appreciated. Is there any problem with continuing to run it without the hood as long as it doesn't overheat?

Alan, you mentioned the radiator and water pump. How about the thermostat? I had installed a new one and in less then a year it failed. I finally yanked it out and modified it. I removed the spring and valve assembly and reinstalled it. You need a thermostat to control temp and flow through the radiator. If you run without a thermostat, the water passes thru the radiator so fast, the coolant doesn't have time to transfer heat to the radiator core and thus won't give up enough heat... end result- overheating. I just spent around $900.00 in the last two years to have the head rebuilt (1st year) and radiator recored (2nd year). The shop that did the radiator modified it and added an extra row of cooling tubes since there was room in the original set up to allow it. I have been very satisfied. That cost me $240.00, and I have never regreted it. Best of Luck, RC

Check to see if the hot air from the radiator is recirculating, may be missing rubber or fabric or sheetmetal baffles that direct air flow, have had this problem on Komatsu trackhoes before. Gene Davis
