I have a 990 David Brown with hydraulics that would not work in really cold weather. Now that it
has warmed up they still don't work. The oil level
is up but looks milky. Where do I start to look
for the problem.
Thanks
Ron Sinclair

Sounds like there might be water getting into the gear box.

Well from just having gone through the same thing. Here is what I had to do. Drain the Hydraulic fluid and also take the filter out and go get another one(K920522) cost me 28.60. While you are at it might as well get a new gasket for the filterpan (k262768) $7.32. Get 6 gal of Hydraulic fluid.Another $27.00. Drain the fluid per manual instructions,(be sure and also take out the large plug to the rear of the filter pan).
Then remove the 8 bolts holding the filter pan on being careful as it will still have fluid in it.
Take out the filler plug,(left side steering colum) pour some fluid in there and wash out as much of the milkey fluid as possible. Clean the filter pan and reassemble and fill with fluid. After starting tractor allow to idle several minutes with lift in down position for system to bleed air out. The milkey look in the fluid is water. I still don't know how it gets in there but it does and about two years is most you can get by without having to change the fluid. Be sure and clean the magnet that is in the bypass section of the screen on the bottom of the filter.
Good luck. Drop me a note and I will help you any way I can. AD

I have David Brown 990 diesel. The hydraulics work well but after I run it for 5-6 hours it won't pick up very fast. Do you think it needs a filter and oil change? Or could the pump be going bad? Also could you give me the numbers for the engine oil and feul filters? Are the filters easy to find or do I have to order them. Thank you very much for any information you can give.

to ADfm(AR)
I drained the oil, cleaned the stainles steel
filter at base of pan, sucked out as much oil as I
could removed and cleaned valves for changing from
loader to 3 point hitch and still wouldn't work.
I took small housing off rear of hydraulic lever
and found mechanics stuck. Cleaned and freed it.
hydraulics work great except 3 pt. hitch will not
stay in "neutral" either up with pump running or
all the way down. Any Suggestions? thanks Ron

Done went in over my head. I will get the shop manual out and read some to see if something comes up that could be causing the problem. Post a message on the Case-David Brown board and maybe one of them can answer the question. Elmer seems to know his Cases. AD

One of the biggest causes of water in the hydraulics is bad transmission gear selector boots.
