I just received a manual for my Avery 'A' and they recommend ENGINE OIL in the tranny/differential (eg. weight 50, 40, 30, depending on the temperature outside). Here's some questions:

1. Does this sound correct and is it safe?
2. Do any other manufacturers recomment this?
3. Why did Avery not use gear-lube oil like everyone else?

Thanks for your help.

JOHN DEERE USES UNIVERSAL TRACTOR FLUID IN ALL IT'S TRANSMITIONS,REVERSERS AND FINAL DRIVES IT IS VERY SIMILAR TO ENGINE OIL EXCEPT IT DOSNT BREAK DOWN AS FAST (VISCOSITY)
IT DOSNT NEED GEAR LUBE BECAUSE YOUR NOT TRAVALING 70 MPH. DOWN THE HIGHWAY.(I HOPE)(HATE TO SEE THAT TICKET.)
THE MANUFACTURER ISN'T TRYING TO GET YOU TO BREAK YOUR TOYS THAT WOULD BE BAD FOR BUSINESS.

Mike,
I have a "Dawn to Dusk" handbook from Standard Oil Copyright 1959. It has a "Viscosity Guide for permissible use of motor oil in transmissions, transfer cases and differentials".
It recommends SAE 20 or SAE 30 Motor Oil to replace SAE 80 Gear Lube and SAE 40, 50 or 60 Motor Oil to replace SAE 90 Gear Lube.

I use regular 80 Gear Lube in my Avery A.

Go with the book. The book also don't tell you to start with light weight and as the system wears out to keep graduating it up in weight til you get to gear oil.
