I just got a model V. The distributor cap is missing- which position on the cap is the #1 plug wire?

There is an Top Dead Center mark on the flywheel of the V. You may be able to see the mark if you shine a flashlight in the hole in the clutch housing just above the starter.

Let's assume that the #1 cylinder is the first cylinder in the firing order (actually, I've seen some where the #1 is not 'first'). Anyways, it doesn,t matter where you start but lets start at #1. Also, let's assume the firing order is 1-3-4-2 which it is on most 4 cylinders. Crank the engine over by hand until the #1 cylinder is at top dead center (TDC). Now, if there is a timing mark on the flywheel, it should be showing, BUT this could be for #1 or #4 (the third cylinder in the firing order) at TDC (one full 360 degree turn away). To find out for sure, one of the two cylinders (#1 or #4) will have tappet clearance at BOTH valves. This will be the one which is at TDC (both valves closed). If you get the #4 cylinder at TDC, then turn the crank one full rotation (360 degrees) and then the #1 will be at TDC. Finally, if for some reason your firing order is not 1-3-4-2, then substitute other numbers in the same order and you'll get the expected results (with the FIRST cylinder that fires at TDC). Then, simply notice where the rotor (assuming you have one on your distributor shaft now) is pointing to. This will be the #1 (or the first cylinder in the firing order). After that, the wires simply pop into place in order. Make sure you note which way the distributor shaft rotates when the engine cranks its normal rotation direction.

Mike, thanks for the info. I'd like to know the hp of my little hercules and what the compression should be. I got the tractor running but it needs a little carb attention. Happy Thanksgiving.

Got a book here that says 1-2-4-3 is your firing order but everything I mentioned earlier stays the same because #1 and #4 are in the same place (first and third). Don't forget to use 1-2-4-3 when you pop in those plug wires in the distributor cap. This book says that engine is a 65 cubic inch ZXB-3 model Hercules engine. Wow, that's a tiny little guy. I've got a spec sheet here if you need any info.
