I am looking at a Long 445 tractor that the dealer describes as "abused". Can someone fill me in about Long tractors? What is their reputation? Where are they built? Is there any salvage yard with parts?

Thanks for any information,
JR

I am considering purchasing a Universal 445. I am told that the Universal and Long 445 are the same tractor. What can folks tell me about this tractor? Are they good tractors? I have a small farm and will use it mostly to push snow and till soil on the weekends. Thanks.

my husband took the key out of the ignition and then forgot he laid it down on the trailer, and now it is history. The new keys you get from the long dealer do not work. we have tried 2. any help out there?

My dad says replace oil seals in the pump-hydrolic. That solved his problem.

You'd be better off with a push cultivaor to use than any Long.

I am not sure I should be posting here, my Long is not a 445, but a 510. I purchased my 510 in 1986, new. I have had good service on my 460 acre farm. Long does require a little more maintaince than most want to put into it however. Like changeing the hydralic fluid and cleaning the filter maybe twice a year in dusty conditions. I have found the paint on mine is not the best in the world, but you don't get the paint on automobiles you got in 1950 either. One reply spoke of the power loss. If fuel is left to gel it will mess up the centrifigul advance in the injector pump. This can be overcome by advancing the fuel pump, usually one gear, or by blocked fuel lines. I bought some fuel that developed and alge like substance one time that blocked the cut off valve on the fuel tank. I have not found any replacement parts anywhere in my area, except at Long dealers. Check the power steering on the one you buy. Turn the steering to full left and see if it returns freely. Get a manuel for your tractor from Tarboro and see what other service needs to be preformed. My Long still cranks on the key and I have never had to use the Glo-plugs for starting. I did have to replace the alternator, I used a delco self-exciter, it is much cheaper than the Long rig, about $100.

I am glad you have had some good service from your 510. But just for a note. You can replace the alternator with a Motorcraft alternator from the early 1970's ford pickups as well. They will wire up just like the orginal but only cost $45.00. This way your charge light on the dash would still work.

As for the hydraulic screen filter, you will probably have to replace it for long. If your hydraulics start to slow down even after you have clean the filter, it will be time to buy a new one.

Hello, I'm interested in Purchasing a used Long tractor in the 50-65 hp range. How do these foreign tractors compare to JD or Ford? Will they last as long and will I find parts for it through the years?

Parts are available from other sources beside Long. TISCO handles some parts, such as starters, belts, muffler and some electrical components. There is another parts supplier in North Carolina besides Long in Tarboro. If I run a cross their name again I will pass it along.

I don't know anything good to say except parts are high and you'll need alot of them. The engines stay together pretty good, but no other part of it does.
They are made in Romania, and are all a piece of crap.
I think all Longs should be termed "abused", however after checking it out you will find it probably was normal use that did the damage.
The hydraulic systems are a joke, the power isn't there, and the tranny and differential are weak, outside of that they are pretty good shed ornaments.
We got 2 of the Longs brand new. You'll pay high for Long experience.

We do not have them up here,so I'm not sure which one you are talking about. Some were made by Zetor, others by UTZ in Romania. The UTZ tractors are sold here as Universals, and are the old Fiat design(1250-1470 Cockshutt,Oliver,White or 5040-5050 A-C)Even though they are the old Fiat tractors the fit,and finish, and dependability just is not there.

I just purchased a 445 about a month ago. Paid $7500
for tractor, bushhog (6'), and front end loader...all
in good to excellent shape. So far it has started
everytime and runs well. A Long dealer or the headquarters
in Tarboro can assist you in getting parts. Good luck.

If you can find parts for these tractors please let me know. Maybe if you buy yours, I can sell you parts from mine or visa versa. Good Luck.

You can buy new parts at the Long dealer in Tarboro, NC 1-800-488-2012.

I am looking for a used starter. Do you have a Long 445? Do you like it?

I do have a Long 445 but it barely runs. I have had it for about a year and have had little time to work on it. As you could probably tell I'm not really a 'Long expert' but since I have found so few people with Long tractors I thought just by having one I could call myself an 'expert'.

I have been looking for places where I could find cheaper, used parts for Long tractors. Do you know of a salvage yard that has parts for a Long 445? What are they asking for the 445 that you are thinking about buying? I paid $1150 for mine but I am not sure what year it is and it is in pretty poor shape.

By the way I noticed the name your using. You're not connected with "Long Tractors" are you?

We have a Long 445 that runs quite well. I've read nothing good on this web. I'd have to check with my dad on where he has bought spare parts. We live in Iowa & I know you can't get them at any local dealer.

Though I share my last name with Long Agriculture tractors I am not related.

I have not found any used parts yet but have only contacted a few salvage yards. When looking for IH I-4 parts last year I contacted 15 to 20 salvage yards. I searched for "tractor salvage" in a CD-ROM yellow pages and got a lot of hits.

The tractor I'm looking at can only be started by towing since the starter is bad. They are asking $1750 which seems about $500 too high. The sheet metal is also rough. Was yours in good shape (the sheet metal) when you bought it?

I just found this today, so I am a little late for you.
I have a Long 445 that I have used in the past. I also have an extra engine(starter incl) that was running find when last used a few years back.
The front axle and parts are still attached to the engine. I let my neighbor borrow the tractor. He got hit by a car and tore the back part of the tractor into 3 pieces.
I purchased another used tractor and made one from the two tractors. That is the reason for the extra parts.

(The tractor is a Fiat design)
As for the tractor, the motors have run good,The problem I have had was the power steering pump and the hydraulic lift pump. Water keeps getting into the transmission oil (have not solved the problem yet)
The above pumps use this oil as a supply and caused me the problem. The brakes can be hard to get to also.

Allis Chambers used the same motor,trans(6 speed)hydraulic lift and final drives for their tractors.
There was a man that rebuilds them in Plantersville, AL.that I met in the past.
Also I heard that Decatur Tractor Parts has used parts also.

I hope this will any one who need the info.

Roger

If that tractor is in pretty good shape other than starting that is probably a good price. My sheet metal is not too bad, just a little banged up in places. I am not much of a diesel mechanic so my problem is more getting the engine to run smoothly and up to the power it should be. My advice is to make sure you know all that is not working before you by it. It can get expensive if you have to start replacing a lot of parts.

Good advice about knowing what is working and what is not. Thanks for the input.
