I have a Long 445 with an 8 speed forward and 8 speed reverse accomplished with a lever (F-R) that hooks to a shaft which goes into an extra casing on back of transmission. It is hung in reverse. I think I am going to have to split the tractor to get to the problem. How do you get the drive gears apart to accomplish this? I have the top to hydrolic area and side inspection panel off and it is not obvious!

Are sure it is a 445? Mine and all the ones I have seen have a high and low range with 3 forward speeds and one reverse each. Having said that, how did it get stuck in gear. If it is like mine, I would tell you to remove the transmission cover with the shift lever. You can realign the shifting rails with a screwdriver, put the cover back on, and you are good to go. I have done it many times.

Yes, it is a Long 445, they sold very few with the 8 speed configuration. It does hang in one of the gears and I can take the cover off and fix that as you described. This model has one gear shift and one lever that comes up to the column with F and R marked on it. The bar that the lever hooks to goes back for reverse and forward for forward. It is stuck all the way forward and is still hung in reverse. I cannot move it with a pry bar in any gear. I think I need to split the tractor, ever done that?

I have split mine, but I don't know how much I can help with yours. I have never seen one with a transmission like yours. I would suggest you make a phone call to a dealer and see if one can help you. You can go to farmtrac.com, the new name for Long, and maybe find a dealer near you. You can call Joe's Tractor Sales, the one nearest to me. The number is 336-885-4582. Ask for Robbie. He has worked with Longs, now Farmtracs, for over 20 years. He is the only person that I know that could be helpful to you.

I posted this all wrong! After reading a reply I went out and scrapped years of paint away and looked rather than assuming what my friend who owns this tractor told me. This is a 6 speed tractor with a forward reverse lever. the lever goes too far forward (toward the forward postion) but stays in the reverse gear set. I still think I will need to break it apart, and would like to know how to disconnect the drive train!

Take off that shifter cover lever. Look at the bottom side of that cover/lever. I think it has some adjustments. Set it for the middle.
