we purchased a 1949? huber grader/maintainer recently for $600. It runs good, hydraulics are good, etc. However the water pump is leaking. does anyone know which way to turn the brass fitting. Hubby is afraid he will strip it and not be able to replace it if he turns it the wrong way.(there is graphite?? string or oakum?? hanging out that needs to be replaced.

Usually the packing nut will tighten in the direction the water pump shaft turns.
