I have a 1942 Oliver 70 and it is missing the gearshift pattern plate. Can someone give me the upper and lower shift patterns please? I am always "guessing" what gear it is in. MANY thanks!!

The front neutral is the low range set of gears and the rear neutral is the high range set of gears.

5*****1 ----- - Forward neutral 2***

6*****3 ----- - Rearward neutral 4*****R

Remove all the ******** and you have it. There is no R in the forward neutral.

The early 70"s had only four speeds forward.I have a 1938 model that Dad bought new that came with only four forward but we farmed two farms so sometime during the early 1940"s the dealer installed 5th and 6th gear. It would go about 12 MPH in 6th gear.

OLMAX,

Most 70's had the 6 speed transmission when it left the factory.

Oliver put a plug ahead of the right shift rail to prevent 5 and 6th. gears from being used on the steel wheeled tractors. All that was needed to be done was remove that plug an you had 6 speeds. Most of the time when rubber tires were added the plug was taken out, so you could have a road gear.

My 70 Hart Parr has had the plug removed and it has never been on rubber.

Your information is probably correct as all I can remember is the tractor came back from the dealer and it had six gears forward. I was probably less then eight years old at the time, didn"t understand why the big tires were in the back, I thought it was so the tractor would be high enough to clear the tall corn during cultivation, also I assumed the front wheels done the pulling because they were in the front. Small boys learning process. There is a shift pattern in the cover of the transmission with only four speeds forward showing. It is along side the tool box above the right brake pedal. Serial no. 221146, it is 4 months younger than me, I have a delivery sheet dated March 8, 1938 along with an Operator and Parts Manual. My long term goal is to get it running, mount the 2 row cultivator on it and pull a manure spreader behind and parade it as fertilizer and weed control 1938 style.
