You have the right idea. I'm in a cnc machining class right now. It wouldn't take very long to make a lot of them. Maybe I better take in a class project.

How hard is it to make wooden mower pitmans on one of those things?

I had never thought about it, but it should be fairly easy. About all you need to do is drill around 8 holes and the big one in the end and have a flat place toward the ends where it bolts on. It would take longer to write the program than it would to run it.
