I have been thinking about the South Bend museum and would like to say a few things.

No museum will ever have a collection of Oliver tractors and machinery like the one that is owned by all the members of the HPOCA.

But then the South Bend #1 plant is just as much a part of Oliver history, and as it's the last chance to preserve an Oliver factory.

I have been a member of the HPOCA for 5 years and have seen a lot of improvement in that time. I want to continue to see the HPOCA improve and be there for it's members , before puting all it's effort into one project.

just my thaught.what do others think?

I would definitely be in favor of saving the South Bend factory. What are the plans if it is decided to go-renovate the existing factory for people to see, or renovate it and make a museum inside with the original look of the outside? My opinion is everything that's at Charles City's museum should remain there, and additional things should be gotten (or donated) to the South Bend one. Emphasis for the machinery there would be the stuff that was originally built there, such as the Super 99, cultivators, rakes, plows, discs, etc. Once the building is down, after all, it could never be put up like it was originally. Jeff.

I agree with CG. Its probably the best and maybe the last chance to get an 'Oliver Museum' off the ground. As a member I endorse any view that the project should be investigated and carried out if at all practicable, within reasonable cash constraints. I live a little further away than CG but would like to think that even if I don't ever get there, the possibility was there. If that building is demolished everything will be gone forever,.... and thats an awful long time. RAB

I visited the Floyd County museum 2 years ago, and am in favor of the South Bend project if for no other reason than to have more space to display more tractors, equipment and memorobilia. The Floyd County building us just not big enough to house a good representation of the marque.

In discussion with collectors here in ontario , canada we would like to see museum in South Bend . I was there a few years ago at a winter convention and the city with the oliver mansion and studebacker house and museum makes it a natural spot. Unfortunatly Charles City plant is completly gone and I think other plants are long gone also. Depending on how it is set up for display There are a couple of us would be honoured to be able to display part of our collection there on a rotateing basis . It's about 650 miles to South Bend from here and a lot of people will not travel that far to see my 20 or so tractors but they would to see 100 plus and equipment in a national museum. and I think theres lots of room there . If its done on a rotating basis it makes a new show every time you go. Just my thoughts G.

If the museum is opened in the South Bend plant{which I hope it is}, I hope that Old Reliable, Little Devil, 20-40, and XO-121 are not moved from there TRUE home in Charles City.

Ditto. History must never forget the rightful birthplace of the tractor industry in Charles City, IA. I too am in favor of further researching the feasibility of using the South Bend site as a museum, given we have nothing left in Charles City with which to work. However, we do have the Floyd County Historical Society and they do a wonderful job. I would like to see, and it is being researched to a small extent, I believe, a permanent memorial in Charles City, perhaps at the plant site, designating it as a historical landmark. Who knows, maybe even a National historic landmark. The town of Charles City now calls itself "America's Hometown" on the billboards along the roadways entering the city. I can vividly remember when the billboards proudly proclaimed the city as the Birthplace of the Tractor, and rightly so. History has not changed. Why did the good people of Charles City allow the billboards to change? Maybe I'm just too sentimental about my old Olivers, but there should be a memorial and Charles City should once again proclaim its honorable place in the history books to its visitors.
