When working my '67 tractor hard i.e. plowing, heavy bushhogging, I periodically see a thick puddle of used "grease" below the steering knuckles (tie rod) at the dash.

Suspecting I had a leak I pulled the dash and starting cleaning. Found all 4 bolts loose. Tightened all and wanting to refill with 90w gear lube. I am unable to locate steering gear filler plug. Is it in a different spot other than RH side of steering box?
Thx,
ShepFL

The filler hole is not apparent as it requires removal of the top right hand upper bolt on the steering housing in order to gain access to the passage. Book states 1 1/2 pints of 90 wt oil. I have 2 S55's and both are filled this way.

The manual states that the Saginaw steering gears were originally filled with 90 weight oil, but you should replace it with No. 1 multi-purpose lithium or calcium base grease through the filler test hole. That hole is on the right side of the steering gear box at the very top. Right where the column enters.

The manual I have said that the Saginaw steering gears used on the Row Crop adjustable front axle, Industrial and Standard models and the Super 55 and 550 models, when built used 90 weight gear oil, this was changed to grease. They added a filler plug to later models to make inserting the grease easier.

Larry,
If you haven't been having any trouble you may not wish to do that until you rebuild at some time in the future. I guess they must have been having trouble with leakage.
