Currently so very tied of tying to get the carb. on my 1944 2N with a Marvel Shneber TSX 241 set up and working properly. I've decided just to bite the bullet and get a new one. Need words from the educated on whose carb is the best. Also I want this thing to be super dependable. What is your thoughts on the electronic ignition for the front mount dist. A 12volt conversion has already been done. I work a full time job and run a beef cattle operation. I need dependability.

IF you don't rebuild your carb and opt for a replacement, Check out TSC or the parts section here if you want to buy online.

I picked up a TSC 241-like carb and used it as a refit on an old continental red-seal stationary engine as the mounting flange was correct .. It worked right out o fthe box with just minor mainjet tweaking..

EI? If you are having spark problems.. I suggest you check out the usual stuff first.. like ignition switch, wireing conenctions..etc, otherwise you may compound your problem.

I also suggest that if you go EI.. get the kit that eliminates the weak front mount coil, and instead lets you use a conventional round can coil. That takes all the 'resistor' questions out of the loop. Cost is more $$.. but as you said.. you just want it to be reliable.

There are ways to make your own round coil conversion.. but if you are going EI.. might as well not jurry-rig it..

Guy's I just want to restore this thing the best I can. It was my dad's tractor and has been sitting in the barn untouched for several years. I just want to do it as right as I possibly can while I'm at it, take advantage of the newer technologies with in reason. Not reinvent the wheel, just make it roll a little better.

Doggie..... ...hey, notta problem wanting to fix yer dads ol'tractor up. We on the board will willingly share with you advice and answer questions. Remember, I flunked mind reading, just ask my ex-wife of 32yrs. You wanna putta new carb on? zats ok, we'll advise you. You wanna putta electronic ignition on, we'll help you there too. Most electronic ignition instructions leave much to be desired for the electrically challenged. We have NO IDEA of yer mechanical ability, so we generally assume yer tractorally challenge and answer appropriately..... ..respectfully, Dell the mindless reader

Dell, I really appreciate the words there. And understand where your coming from. I'm just a humble old fart now. Supposedly a Certified Master Mechanic in younger days. I occupy a desk mostly now with occasional shop visits to straighten out problems. I'm alway's glad to get back to the farm every evening though. I generally try to buy the best bang for my buck. I know this day and time you get what you pay for and some companies charge more than their worth. Thats why posed the questions. It's hard to beat the vast knowledge shared on a sight like this. I really enjoy reading and learning on this sight. Folks Thank You in Advance for all the help it's greatly appreciated....

I was in the same boat as you are, and ended up doing the same thing. I bought the cheap one from the people that put this forum on. I figure all the help I get off of here I need to throw some coins there direction.
Anyway my 2N hasn't run this good since I bought it. Had to do very little adjustmet to it at all. Now most of the time I dont even have to hit the choke on it to get it started, even after sitting overnite. Just turn the gas on, and bump the troutle a little and it fires right up. But everone to there own, this ended up the best fix for me, even after overhauling the old rusty one.

Doggie..... ..ya want dependablity? gitta Yammabottadeereee diesel. $$$$ with power steering and live hydro and FEL

Ya want affordability? Iff'n you can't do it, then have yer carb professionally rebuilt. DO NOT recarb with ZENITH. (my opinion only) The M/S is eminently rebuildable. $250 tops. Full kit is just $40 (cheap) Iff'n yer an electronically challenged shadetree mechanic, hire yer electronic conversions done. $250 tops. New points just $15 (cheap) Change yer weaksister ignition switch. $15 (cheap) will fixx yer weak sparkies.

The M/S is not hard to correctly adjust. Both Ford and M/S say to adjust both the side-pointing idlemix and down-pointing mainjet to 1-turn. That is just a starting point. Much to the dismay of gov't smog bureaucrats each and every carb must be individually adjusted to the its specific engine.

I set the down-pointing mainjet to 2-turns and LEAVITTT!!!! I then adjust the side-pointing idlemix for maximum idle rpms, NOT SMOOTHEST, max idle. I then adjust the behind the carb idle-speed to an incredibly SLOOOooow 400rpms. (ennythang under 500rpms is probably close) I do the idlemix and speed song'n'dance at least 3-times; always adjust for max idle speed, NOT smoothest. UNDERSTAND???

Remember the side-pointing idlemix is BASSACKWARDS; out for lean, IN for ENRICH. The last time I adjusted my eazy starting 6-volt 52-8N, my idlemix was 1/4-turn and idlespeed was 410rpms. Yours should be similar. Simple, eh?..... ..respectfully, Dell

I have several old tractors around here that work almost every day, and have the original carburetor and have conventional ignition systems.

I just can't IMAGINE what some of you guys do to your tractors to have so many problems!

(That being said, I have several other tractors that have EI, and even one that has EFI, however, that is because my son and I like to experiment with what CAN be done to old tractors, not necessarily what SHOULD be done to the poor old things!)

Almost certainly, there's nothing wrong with your carburetor that a kit and some detailed attention can't fix!
