Some confusion as to which axle pin to buy!!!

2N with, supposed 8N axle(changed by prev. owner, and does have 8N front Hubs and wheels).

? # 1. Is there any diff. between the 2N and 8N axle?? If so, how do I tell!!!???

? #2. Which axle pin do I buy??? There are 2 diff. pins listed, one is longer than the other!!!

Offered pins: 2N 3126-D.....fits yrs. 1943-52. Shorter pin
And...2N 3126-E.....fits yrs 1943-44 2N only before ser#167,488
Longer pin. My 2N ser# 150325.

The pin that is in the axle now, is a short pin,(does not go all the way thru the axle support.

Help!!!! The pin that is in there now is worn to the extent that if the front gets tweeked enough, the rad. fan, cuts the bottom rad. hose.

TIA....From the dummy, that needs help!!!! :oops:

I think what matters is which front support do you have. The 9ns are cast with a steel plate riveted for dogleg support with no external holes, and take the strait pin no flange. Dan had a picture of this a while back

Early 2n were cast with riveted front support for dog legs with expternal bolt, not sure which pin.

Late 2n 8n front support is all stamped steel takes front pin with ear on it. Front axels all have the same bore

Gary;

Is there anything I can do or measure on my 2N that would help you?

Dan; Did not even think about you having the same 2N I have. Don't know where my head was. Could have had ya check your Axle pin to see how far out the back it extended.

I think I got it all settled, from the other guys repies. But thanks for the offer.

BTW: Your axle pin, should be the same one as mine. It is the longer of the two, that is posted, with the part#, if ya want to make a note of it.

Thanks

#1 - YES - there is a difference between the 2N and 8N axles. The radius rods will be attached to the 8N axle, the 2N radius rods are attached to the spindle housing extensions you slide in and out for the width adjustment. This allows the width to be adjusted without having to re-align the front wheels when you do - but Ford HAD to move this location to the center axle due to Ferguson having the patent for this.

#2 - Buy the one for your axle - based on the info above.

HTH,
Dan

Can you find out the dimensions of the "long" and the "short" pins and then measure the journal length and figure out from that what length pin to use?

Gary, the best I've been able to determine, & I believe it to be accurate, is that the radius rods attach to the axle center section on 8N's and to the axle extensions on all earlier 9N/2N's.

Jim;

Thanks for the reply. That would make me believe, that the axle was NOT changed to an 8N axle after all, and That the only thing was changed was, the front Hubs and wheels.

So... I think my 2N axle is still on my 2N, Thereby narrowing down my ????'s.

I think the pin they put in is too short, causing slop in that area, so now it is wearing out.

Gotta get it fixed, cause the front end slipped off an ice berm and cut the bottom rad. hose, while plowing snow. Not too happy.!!!

Thanks again.

Thanks guys. With what you have come up with, and me pulling up Dan's pic of his redone axle support..... . I think the pin that I need is the longer one That I posted, Unless someone changes my thoughts on how far that pin should go through the axle support. The pin that is in the support now, is just barely through the axle and does not reach the rear bushing. I stuck my finger in the back of the suport hole, and could just feel the end of that pin. It also felt like the end of the pin is bent in a couple of places.

Thanks for the help. I'll wait for a couple of days to order, in case someone tells me diff.

Den;
That's ok. I was having fits because there is a lot of confusion, in the parts book, #'s wise and to tell you the truth until I posted this, I was at a loss as to which one I really needed. As you can tell by the pix I posted, the offered pin's are not what the book says. But That's what this forum is for, question and answer time!!!! :roll:
I've been looking through the FO-4, parts and assembly manual, and parts sales places, for two days. Was starting to drive me crazy!!!! :lol:
Finally found out what I needed at just 8 N's.

Oh well live and learn, I guess. 8)
Thanks again.

Gary :)

The dimension I was given for the early "flangeless" 9N pins (from Don B's prints) was 4.350 OAL. That results in about .050 protrusion in each end. I would expect the 2N pin to be long enough to extend beyond the bore in the support by a "small" amount.

Thanks TOH;

Then that tells me for sure that I need to buy the longer pin.
Thanks for the reply. Pretty much what I was leaning to, after checking the pin that is now in my 2N.

Gary :)
