Major seat time all this past week, discing down 10 acres of dirt in prep for reseeding alfalfa. If youse remember, I plowed the field with a BIG tractor and 5-bottom moldboard, so the lumps were a bit bigger than what I get with the N and 2-bottom. Liked to rattled my teeth out... I don't think a new Kubotee would have survived what I just put the N through.

I've also come to the understanding that 10 acres comes real close to swallowing up an 8N when you're discing.

My grandfather started with 80 acres that had just been logged off. Heavy soil and a team of horses with a walking plow. I remember the old single gang disc pulled by horses. Then springtooth and light drag it. All the while walking behind the team and the dust. The disc had a seat on it which wasn't comfortable riding but did add extra weight with my grandfather sitting on it. He then moved up to a Fordson F with an Oliver 2-12 plow. Oliver 6' disc. Now, we work up that 80 acres in about 4 hours in air conditioned, airseated comfort. Still get behind with our work though.

Ed and the rest of you guys,I"m getting my "LA" Case ready to do a 10 acre meadow plow, but I might bring in the 2 bottom and the "8N" to start out and plow a garden patch. All still up in the air but, thats my plan.I also enjoy the old equipment and how they run and just being outside with them.Problem I have and I bet alot of you have the same, and that is so many projects! I just dont know where to go next. Then there is this other old tractor and a combine,,ah well you know

Yep. it's real easy to squint my eyes and pretend it's 1950 again. Despite the lack of amenities and rather higher maintenance requirements, I really enjoy farming with vintage equipment.

How 'bout passing on a bit of advice: how did you get your field back level after plowing? The big 5-bottom left huge furrows at each side, and the plowed dirt has sort of a 7' wide washboard effect (rises in the middle, lower where the edge of the plow was)?

I've been running the backblade over the high spots, and to fill in the edge furrows, but it sure takes a long time...

Tough on the old bottom, ain't it? I've spent so much "seat time' as some like to call it working 32 acres that I used to put in oats every year, that I ought to have callouses on mine or my head examined! A bit much for an N. But, I bet that back in time there were many that would have thought our "work" was a cake-walk!

Now that sounds like it would've been an enjoyable project . I miss plowing , discing & harrowing the fields . Used to do alot of it as a kid . Its been about 50 yrs now . Those little Ns can surprise a guy huh ? Great part of history in hand . Njoy & God bless, Ken
