"Letting the smoke out"... Now I've done it...

While attempting to polarize the generator on my 6v 52 8N, I noticed a little smoke coiling up from the generator. Apparently, I hit the wrong terminal. Anyway, now the tractor won't start. Turns over, but only a few times before the battery is down. Not turning fast enough or long enough to start (even after charging the battery). What should I check first, points, condenser, regulator, generator, starter? Thanks for any constructive advice (I've already had plenty of the other kind from myself).third party image

I'm not an elec expert either but it sounds like you may have fused some contacts or have melted a wire and have a dead short somewhere, cause it sounds like your battery is getting drained as fast as you can charge it. try disconnecting your battery and charging it and see if it will take a full charge to isolate that possibiblity of a bad battery. If your battery does charge up good and will crank over with it. Then chase the wires and see which one is shorted....HTH...Tim

Was the tractor running when you tried to polarize it?

I nearly did the same thing and had to ask several times before I got the answer. I was lucky. Thats the 1 thing they forget to tell ya when they describe how to polarize. I respect you electrical wizards, ya'll just don't know how lucky ya'll are to understand electrics, but understand, ya can't take nuttin' for granted when describing to us electrically challenged. Like I said before I wanted to be an electrical wizard when I was young and still do, but after 35 yrs., I just can't wrap my brain around it. Mechanically I can figure out just about anything. See it once and I pretty much got it. HTH

Chances are that you didn't do your regulator or generator any favors. You may have lunched one or both. However, forget the charging system until you get it running. I can't see any way that you could have damaged the starter or ignition system. If it's cranking too slowly and for too short a time to start, them chances are your battery is needs charged or is bad. Start with that. Also check all the electrical connections in the starter circuit for clean, bright, and tight. That means the ground strap, too. No paint, corrosion, or rust at the connections. If all is well there, it's time to look at the starter.

Everything you say makes sense, but I'm wondering why I need to go back to the bright and tight if everything was in good shape prior to my mishap? Also, I've tried charging the battery overnight and jumping from a 12v to the starter (grounded to frame). Still turns over a revolution or two and then slows to a crawl. Guess I'll pull the battery and generator and take them in for testing. Hope I haven't cooked the regulator as I just replaced it recently. Of course, I would prefer replacing the regulator over the generator or starter. By the way, when I made my faux pas the engine died immediately. Haven't been able to start it again since then.

Very big Clue!!! If you shorted the Batt Terminal on the regulator the current may have fried your wiring

You need to chase the Battery wire (from Regulator) back to the Dist Block, and then back through ammeter to the Starter Relay. Look for melted insulation, bare wire, Over heated (discoloration) connections.
