1948 8N Slack in steering (How to?)

I seem to have slop in my steering box. No slop in any of the other steering components just the steering box itself. I have what I believe to be a 1948 8N (my tractor has no block serial numbers) and would like to know how I adjust the steering slack out.

I'm well versed in doing adjustments to automotive steering but not this old 8N. I see no gear adjustment sector adjustment at all???

Thanks Dell again for your seemingly expert advise. I'll be trying to adjust that steering out tomorrow or this weekend as I have some neighbors to help move

The cover plate bushings are eccentric - you MAY be able to tighten'er up by unbolting the 4 bolts on each side and rotating the plates one bolt at a time to see if they will tighten up the steering lash. If you have a huge amount of lash, Dell's solution will likely be the fix.

just order the bearing. then buy the cornhead grease and 3/8" zerk fitting from your john deere dealer. thats what you start with.

then ripper apart.

Smokie..... ...iff'n you looked in yer I&T FO-4 repair manual, you'd learn behind yer pitman arm 4-bolt washer is an 8-bolt rotate-able bushing sleeve that controls sector gear mesh.

Howsomevers; we're finding that most 8N steering slop is the upper bearing above the "ball-nutt". Check'em by jackin' the frontend UP and swinging the steering wheel back'n'forth and WATCH the steering wheel hub fer uppsie'n'downsies.

Sorry don't have the FO-4 manual yet. Are the four bolts that you are talking about the ones I see in the pic? do I take the bolts out and turn them? if so which way?
Also I keep hearing about this cornhead grease. What exactly is this?

Dell, I Just jacked the front end up too. No uppsie'n'downsies at all.

Also on the other side if the steering box (right side as you sittin' on the tractor) by the four bolts and just above at about at the one-o-clock position there is a grease zirk. Is this the grease zirk that you are talking about to add this grease?

Smokey..... ..yep, 4-bolts ya see is what ya gotta remove so you can "twist" the eccentric bushing around the sector arm. As to which way to twist'em, dunno, go 1-bolthole (45deg) CW on eccentric and see iff'n that helps. Iff'n not go 2-boltholes (90deg) CCW the OTHERWAY and see iff'n that helps more better. Its hard to say which way, you may be "obtimum" right now. ?quin sabbie?

Geeze..... .there was justta big thread yesterday about cornhead greese. How some John Deere dealers want to ONLY order and sell a FULL case. There are other "0"-weight greeze out there. We recommend John Deere 'cuz they are the most commonly available Yuppie dealer around. It takes 2-tubes of sticky cornhead greeze to OVERFILL yer steering gearbox so the UPPER BEARING gitts adequate lubrication. Besides being "sticky" it also doesn't LEAK out yer steering gearbox seals like the factory recommended 90wt oil.

Gitt that I&T FO-4 manual $25 (cheap)..... ..Dell

I used cup grease in my John Deere 40 years ago.Replacing the bottom seal on a tricycle front end is a nasty job.Any soft grease will work.Check the tubes of grease you have on hand.Lubriplate white grease comes in big cans and may be put up in cartridges.
