After reading the Smiths page on axle seals replacements I was getting ready to do this job on my 1949 8N. But then I found an old post by Dell about just spraying the brakes with brake cleaner and removing some of the transmission fluid instead.

I hate to question Dell"s knowledge of it but is that the best route for fixing weak and I assume soaked brakes?

Cheers,
Dukester

Mine started leaking after a PTO shaft upgrade and fluid replacement. I took it apart and washed the shoes with brake cleaner and they worked fine for several months. Unfortunately I never thought of the bolt thing and it's slicked up again. I guess I have to do it right this time and pull the bolt.

make sure you replace seals and sealant between the shims. make sure your hubs are not wore. the brake cleaner works fine but it doesn"t remove the grease embedded in the pads if they were on there a long time. place the pads in a vise and take a small propane torch and start in the center and gently heat the pad. you will see the grease run out of the pad and keep working and keep working slowly to the edges. this boils the grease out since it is at a lower boiling point than what the temp. of the pad will with stand.

My hubs were worn out when I got my N 20+ years ago, I am quite satisfied with my new hubs and seals so far.

AND--if you have good hubs, I belive your 49N only has the outer seal ($8-9) which could fix the leak for you until you need to replace the brakes. Add some permatex and elbow grease and you've got less than $10 in the job---Cheap fix for yor problem----Tim

Dukester..... ..hey, its a $10 fix (cheap) iff'n it works. Pull that bottom bolt in yer 6"-dipstick round plate to drain OVERFILL hydro-tranny oil. Overfilled hydro-tranny oil splashes out to the rearaxle bearing in trumpet mouth. Iits supposed to, but not too much oil, bad seals will leak oil out onto yer brakeshoes. NOT GOOD!!!

More better you check yer rearaxle BIG NUTT for sloppy. That is usually what kills yer seals. Grab the top of yer tire and shake'm east'n'west and watch yer BIG NUTT for space movement. You'll feel, hear and see sloppy. Thats BAD HUB. $50 (cheap) Tip: try and re-torque that BIG NUTT to a gut-wrenching 450ft/lbs. You can NOT overtorque. I use a 4ft 3/4-drive breaker bar and a BIG GRUNT! (grin)..... ..Dell

Where do you get a 4' breaker bar? The largest I can find is 3'?

Get a piece of pipe that fits over the breaker bar, can make it as long as you need to get leverage.

So, even if the brake shoes have never been replaced I can get away with the drain & spray trick?

Sounds like a winner to me, guess I just wanted get my hands dirty...

Dell's method worked for me. I used oven cleaner and sanded the glaze off the pads over a year ago and the breaks have worked great ever since.
