Here's my problem,my 51 8N has good strong lift but drift's down after a few minute's. I've checked the fluid and it looks good,I've read that it's usually the lift cylinder rings leaking. Now my plan is to drain the old fluid, flush/clean out the housing, pull the lift cylinder, inspect and replace the piston with the Jubilee/NAA piston. Can I clean everything w/o dropping the pump and if not would it be worthwhile to rebuild that also? or "if it ain't broke don't fix it". Any advice for this greenhorn would be appreciated.

I had good luck cleaning the sump of my 50 sidemount when I replaced the lift piston; it was a lot easier to flush it out & remove the sludge w/ the top cover off than trying to do it thru the side covers. I"d say I got 95% of it that way. Dropping the pump will allow you to get it all; if you do that, replace the PTO seal while you"re there. I would not fool w/ the pump itself.
