Easiest way to re-install your front mount distributor is to put it in position against the block and start the two bolts that hold it to the engine. Now hold slight pressure against the distributor and turn the rotor till the tang on the back of the distributor drops into the slot in the end of the cam shaft. When it falls in the slot you will se absolutely no crack between the base of the distributor and the surface of the block. Hold it in position and tighten the two bolts that hold the distributor to the engine. Sometimes this is not emphasized enough, because many distributors have been ruined because the installer thought the tang was in the slot on the cam and it was not. With age and wear, the tang might feel like it has tried to drop in the cam slot even if it is 180 degrees away from being correct. IF IT IS CORRECT, YOU WILL SEE ABSOLUTELY NO SPACE BETWEEN THE SURFACE OF THE DISTRIBUTOR AND THE FLAT SURFACE ON THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE.

Timing on the front mount engine is not critical or complicated. If it ran good before you set the points it should run equally good now. Just carefully position the offset tang on the distributor shaft so it fits the offset of the camshaft. Make sure the housing is completely flush with the timing cover before the bolts are tightened so you don't break the distributor housing.

Timing is done on the bench, Dist. mounts on front only one way. The topic came up the other day. The archives on this board are great.
