Running fine a long time, almost forgot what a problem is..... I've ordered a new distributor cap(broke a nodule off the old one) but to use the old one temporarily, what can I make a gasket from??-- Cork pc I have is too thick. And which side of the dist takes the short screw and which the long? My tractor just quit with no spark at the plug so I have replaced the condensor. and it is firewood time! Bob

Nice to hear what seems good pointers after being frustrated down in the field under the front of an 8N on an afternoon and getting no work done!. I can try the distrib cover without gaskets until the new cover comes(with a new gasket I hope). I will try to move that axle out one hole. I take the distributor off to work on it, but I forgot which screw goes on which side(distributor mounting screws/bolts)--there is a shorter and a longer. Which goes on which side or do they only fit on their correct side?. It would be nice of the whole engine cover would lift up- looks like it does???? Bob in the Adirondacks

Bob..... ...you really did mean the 2-bolts that hold the frontmount distributor to the block. Sorry. According to the N-Parts MPC, that would be p/n: 48-12148, screw, 5/16-18x0.87" (hex-head) 2-ea, +lock-washer. (I always called ennythang with hex-head a bolt, screws have slots, duh)

While the 2-bolts that hold the governor on (short on top) are location specific, I don't think a 1/8" longer 1-inch bolt will interfere with whirling parts behind the engine front cover. And a 7/8" long bolt probably isn't very common local hardware store. I'd probably play safe and double lockwasher yer longer bolt until you can git new 7/8" long 5/16-NC bolts (grade-2 would be addequate altho the OEM is essentually grade-5)..... ...Dell

Bob..... ...so ya broke yer 4-nipple distributor cap, eh? Bettcha its #2 nipple. This happens because your frontaxle kingpin is worn and sloppy. And it will break yer new distributor cap too. Here's a temporary fix. WIDEN-OUT yer frontaxle 1-bolthole. It will change the angle of the axle justta littlebitt and semi-prevent the axle from "klonkin" yer new distributor cap. Simple, eh?

Yer distributor has 2-screws that are #8-32 size. The condenser uses a #8-32x1/4 screw. Yer points use a SHORT #8-32x3/16 screw. DO NOT USE the longer 1/4" screw for yer ignition points as it will "catch" yer under the ignition points plate "centrifical-advance" weights and you won't have enny engine power.

As for somesort of "gasket", try thin cardboard..... ....Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-master

Well you can run without gaskets for a long time; indefinitely, really, if you avoid direct contact with moisture. I would just put it together, sans gaskets, order the parts and put the gaskets on later.

I just did my first tuneup on my front-mount 8N and I have owned it for two years. There were no gaskets for the cap and coil and it ran just fine. I did notice that if I blew out the radiator with a water hose then the tractor would not run for a half hour or so. I am ordering gaskets now for myself.

Those front-mounts distributors are a pain to work on.

Gotta git me one of them kit'shin tables with a vice on it to werk on'em, bet that would please the wimmen in my life. Iffin they dont have a vice then they must have a secret way to pin the dist between the salt and pepper shaker. Iffin I had a ft. mt. I would convert it to a side mt and make sumone rich on ebay. Hobo, I got one of each, and once you lick the problem of gettin' the distributor out , I think front mounts are easier to work on. I also like the side mount for it's easy to get to in place. One is just as easy as the other to me now that I understand them both!!!

After the wife went to bed, late at night I brought the carb from the 8N and rebuilt it on the kitchen table.
A big No-neck, knuckle draggin fatheaded friend of mine got too cold outside one winter and brought his chevy 350 block into his living room and built up the short block there.

Front mount distributors are easier to work on if you take them off. Two bolts hold it in. Work on it on the kitchen table. Easy to put back in. Just don't force it.
