"N" stands for "NUT", as in those of us who own the darn things (or are they like CATS and own US?), and put up with their silly quirks and inadequacies and still LOVE the darned old machines!

From what I was told, the N just stood for tractor. As opposed to A, B or T model cars. Went away in late 54 when they started bringing out the hundred series of tractors.

You are correct sir. From The Vintage Ford Tractor Resource website:

Henry Ford's chief engineer Laurence Sheldrick created the alphanumeric designation system for Ford tractors in 1937. Tractors produced from 1939 to 1952 carry the letter designation "N," Sheldrick's designation for "tractor."

:)
The same guy who thought "N" stands for tractor, must be the same guy who put the distributor on the front!

Several things to think about with front mount. It was out of the way in thick brush and abuse, the original applications were engineered for areason(be it cost or design ) and it still works great 50 years later!!!

Will the new tractors be so lucky and so easy to run when computer chips burn out and are obsolete?

Front mount distrib ain't so bad. front mount coil is bad. How many distribs can you pull so easilly and not worry about timing issues?

I"m messing around with it right now.
The coil does seem floppy, I bent the tangs a bit to increase tension on snap down..still, I thought of using two gaskets, but the gap...

1 gasket should be a snug fit. my bet is the place the bail hooks is worn.. allowing play.. easy enough to verify, and if so.. adjust the bail accordingly.
