Does anyone know where I could find conversion parts to convert the existing PTO on a 9N to a live PTO? Does such a thing exist?

Thanks all for your input. I didn't think it would be a practical retro-fit unless it was already out there. So, I guess that answers my question. I probably wouldn't know what to do if I had a tractor with a live PTO anyway, but it sure seemed like it would be a good thing to have. Guess I'll have to wait until this tractor wears out. Seeing that it's only 67, I guess I'll be waiting a while longer.

I've also heard of the sherman 'live pto' unit the other poster mentioned, and have heard that it can be installed in an 8n.. so would guess it could install in a 9n / 2n as well. Wouldn't want to know the cost of it though!.. probably cheaper to buy a ford 660 or 860 and get live pto and hyds.. etc.

I believe the Jubilee was the first ford to have the optional live PTO. I had one and it was run off the hydraulics, not a true live PTO, but it worked. I dont have a clue if it could be converted, if you could find one.

I can do it for something in the range of $10,000.00 :-)

Of course, you may not like the result either.

Seriously, to make a Ford N series tractor have a live PTO would mean a redesign of the clutch and transmission. Just not something practical to do.

No. Unless you want to invent one.

I had a phone conversation with Derek Barkley and he claims that he went to michigan or someplace very far away and purchase a 2N (or maybe it was an 8N, i don't remember exactly) that had a live PTO conversion on it. I asked about the particulars and somehow, the drive train was broken at the coupler in the rear end between the tranny and differential and a form of clutch went in there. I beleive the clutch linkage for the wheels was relocated to work that clutch instead of the normal one behind the flywheel. He's working on restoring the tractor now and should have it ready for some of the later shows if i'm not mistaken. I can't wait to see it!

I once saw an 8N with what could be considered a live PTO. It looked to be a clutch pack between the transmission and rear end, and was released by moving a lever that came out of the PTO lever cover. It really wasn't a true live PTO, as it simply stopped the tractor from moving by adding another clutch after the transmission. I'm not sure, but I think it was made by Sherman. Sherman did make hydraulic-controlled units for the Jubilee/NAA, same idea but they used a small hydraulic pump added behind the main lift pump to assist the actuation. Have seen a couple of those as well.

If you want a live PTO, best to buy a newer Ford with it built-in.

Based on my limited knowledge of tractors, there are basically 3 types of PTO drives; transmission PTO (like all N's and many others), live PTO (double/two stage clutch, one for drive train and one for PTO) and independent PTO (internal hydraulic drive).

I have heard of a live hydraulic lift system conversion for the N (Zane's live thang) but I have never heard of a live PTO conversion for the N.

It does sound like a good ideal though.

I have a Jubilee that has this attachment on it-=- have not tried to use it yet tho but plan to hook up a bush hog soon and see if it works-- I would like to get a piece of literature or a manual explaining correct procedures-- I think Kelly posted a while back that he had one for sale-- I sure would like to get the literature on this gadget.. I just got my tractor running and have been plowing and discing with it-- dont want to goof up its innards
