Thanks in advance for all your info, I have benefited from all your great posting for years, never spoke up till now, need some expertise. Got this at a sale while surrounded by John Deere guys, bought it right.
I have a couple of questions: 1. Since it doesn't have the protective metal, I figured it was removed, but I couldn't find any obvious mounting points and the rear wheels, although the same style, had standard 24" tractor tires that were stamped "military", same on front, was there an application for this unit besides airport/factory use? 2. The seat is different than I've seen, been told it is consistent with a WWII air craft type, any thoughts 3. Where is a good source of technical info for operationg this one. Sorry about the long post, geuss I've been saving it up till now. I have more exact pictures of certain parts if that will help. I'll take any help you can give.

Big B, would you post some more pictures. I'm working on a 1940 Industrial, the forerunner of the BNO. The 1940 had a 4" channel sub frame that attached to the pull arm pins in the back and in the front to a 1.750" round shaft that U bolted under the front saddle (Special Saddle). In you pic it looks as though your tractor has a subframe. Also, the 1940 had a special clutch pedal to clear the subframe. Also, does yours have a BNO tag under that left rear tire, or did it leave when they removed the sheet steel. Also, does it have hyd disc brakes? Thanks much, Kelly.

Hey Kelly;

Got any pictures of you with your machines? I wouldn't mind meeting some more ladies that dig old tractors as much as I do! Hope to meet some more nice folks as i start my first year of being a tractor show exhibitor and not as merely a spectator.

Jeb

Jeb, sorry, I'm not a female. When I was born in 1942 Kelly was a guys first or last name. The first girl I ran into was Kelley, but you know how Moms are, they quit doing this. Anyway, go to 8Nfever.com then 2003 Florida Flywheelers. About the bottom of the page is one of my tractors and plow aluminum hood serial #516.

I am planning on restoring it eventually, I am finishing a 2 year project on a 1 owner 41 9n so it will have to get in line. I would like it to look like it did originally, hence the questions since it looks different than I've seen before.

Big B..... ...I hope you paid "scrap-price" for that, 'cuz thats about all its worth. The BNO-20/40 were customized N-Tractors by Sherman Bros/Harry Ferguson for WW2 military use. It used a BIG FLAT plate shaped into a fender for traction weight. Had smallhub 4-bolt 10" frontwheels and 20" dual truck rearwheels. It also had HYDRAULIC rearbrakes. The gastank had a military specified BRONZE gascap/filter. A frontmount hydraulic pump definately was NOT standard and would have been in the way of the front plate bumper. There would be NO 3-POINT rear lift arms.

Records are unclear how many BNO-20 (single rear wheels) and BNO-40 (dual rear wheels) were made but America's Tractor Industry made many aircraft tugs from their agriculture tractors. Many aircraft tugs were re-converted to agriculture tractors after the war because there was a great shortage and high demand for tractors.

There are 5 BNO tug pictures in the N-Ford Pictorial archives (do a search). About the only thing incommon between BNO's and N's are the hood and flathead engine. They are an interesting side-lite of N-History but their LOW GROUND CLEARANCE makes them an agricultural liability, 'course it makes'm eazier to zip under the wings..... ...respectfully, Dell

Kinda tough on a new guy there Dell, but I've been reading your stuff for years and I know you tell it like it is, I got off easy. Thanks to the john deere guys at the sale, no one knew what it was, they couldn't give it away. All the unique military features are still there including the gas tank filters, brakes etc.Just couldn't let it go by, just had to sneek it in under the cover of darkness to keep the marriage.

Hey Dell, that BNO pic you posted of the finished product was pretty cool. That sounds like a pretty cool restoration project as there will not be many of those around dont you think?

Go easy on the poor guy he said he already bought it...

Oh by the way, you near Port Angeles, my son just moved into the town.
