Howdy all,

A seller on E-bay is selling a fuel gage for the N's that replaces the gas cap. It has a float that mechanicaly moves the needle on the fuel gage. Anybody got one of these? How does it work?

Hec

They have them for sale at Red Rock Mfg (see link below) for $23. But for that price, I'd rather just keep unscrewing the cap and looking in. Who needs a gas gauge? I can usually just SEE about how much is in there. Or keep a little magnetic flashlight attached to the tractor to use to see inside. Us Yankees up here are a pretty thrifty lot! I will admit they look pretty neat, and if someone wanted to GIVE me one for a birthday present or Christmas, I wouldn't complain!

actually that looks just like the one found on old briggs & stratton engines, it has a float on a twisted metal strip in the middle of the wire cage, when the float goes up and down with the gas level, it causes the needle to move coraspondinly ericlb

While restoring my late dad's 1950 8N I was in the process of painting the gas tank and when I flipped it I could hear something rattling around inside. After about a half hour trying to get the object out (made difficult by the internal baffles) I finally removed my dad's gas gauge. A stick about 8 inches long. :)

Take a cork. Jab a hole in it.

Remove fuel cap. drill 1/8 in hole thru it.

1 ea. stainless steel rod long enough .

Recipe"

thru the "drilled hole in the gas cap, slide rod.
attach rod to float. (cork)

Fill gas tank.

Observe when full.
rod should stick up quite aways.

Operate tractor 'till she QUITS.
Then you will know when SHE IS EMPTY.

BOBBERS around when in rough conditions.

CAUTION: COAT THE CORK WITH SHELLAC FER AWHILE BEFORE GETTIN GAS ON IT.

Old stuff.. OH YEA, Have drill hole thru battery box cover, maybe!

GOOD LUCK....JD/pa

I got one and I like it a lot, can tell how much gas I have at a glance now instead of peering down into the tank and guessing.

Works great if you look at it, my tractor quit while I was hauling brush, opened gas door and looked sure enough guage read empty.
My gas door hits on the guage when it is screwed in one direction but not the other so check clearences.

Thanks for the reply's. It sounds like it works alright. I sure hate sticking anything but gas into the tank. I think I'll get me one and give it a try.
