Hello, I have an older 8hp Briggs and Stratton, horizontal shaft, and need to know the engine oil capacity.

The lookup is the best answer but howsomever.

Most smaller BS and some larger use 20 oz.. Lawnmower oil is readily available in this size container. Where they came up with that number I'll never know. Or you can buy the usual quart with the measuring stick conveniently provided. Gone are the days of the metal quart oil can with no markings.

For years I have filled engines to the top of the fill plug, which is more than 20 oz, but that 's what I did. Never regretted it.

If you know the Model Number and Type Designation (which is usually either stamped in the coweling or riveted to a plate on the coweling) you can go to the link below and download the owners manual and parts list for the engine. Most of the manuals I have downloaded include such information. Good luck.

Brian If you go to the local hardware store, in the small engine accessory area ( filters, plugs...) they have prepackaged oil for different engine sizes. Even if you dont buy it you can see what the capacity is.
