Stripped threads

Hey guys it's me again with another spindle problem. Apparently a previous owner allowed the front end on my 8n to get "wobblie" and the castle nut wore down the threads on the spindle. After replacing the races, bearings and seal, I find that I can't snug it up because the threads are shot a half inch from the end. I tried using a couple of thick washers under the nut but then I couldn't get the cotter pin in. Anyway rather than completely replace the spindle a machinest suggested that I might consider re-threading the end of the spindle (which is 3/4"-16) to the next smaller size. Anyone ever hear of this, or have a suggestion?

Your problem has been covered on here before!

There is a special locking nut that will fix your problem, and it looks like this:

(remove asterisks "*")

In my present tired state, I'm not sure if this is the exact part you need, but it will give you the idea of how to fix it. The repair spindle nut is supposed to grip tighter than the original.

Bob, The clamp type lock nut looks like it would work, but they must keep an armed guard near the bin where they"re stored, at $26.39 a piece. I guess that"s still cheaper than a new spindle. Anyway I"ll keep it open as an option. Thanks

Spudds..... ...caution: there's TWO different sizes of "clamp'em" nuts for N-Axles. 3/4" for front axles, about $12 (cheap) and 1-1/4" for rear axles, about $26 (cheap) And they do work good..... ...Dell

Well, I'm not going to kid you with this solution, as it is most likely the crudest repair I ever made... I had the exact thing happen to me with an old utility trailers axle spindle... I tightened it up by hand so the bolt was close to the bearing and welded the bolt right to the spindle!!! I figured, got a welder, got a grinder!!! It's worked really well, but to this day, I still thing it's the crudest repair in the book!!! At least my book anyway!
Get it re-threaded... I think I just had a need to get a skeleton out of the closet!!!

That's a possibility. Other possibility is to use 2 jambnuts if you can get them in the correct size, and not use the castle nut. Run it up tight with a waher or whatever.. then lock it on with the other nut. Heck.. might get a jambnut to run up behind the castle nut. Just depends on those threads and how bad they are.. etc.

I think the smith does have a used spindle though.. if you are pulling it.. might as well throw a used on in.. unless you can get that one threaded cheap.

Another option is to have it welded up, and rethreaded oem size. A good machinest can do this before his first cup of coffee without even being awake.

Guess you could also drill the old spindle for a new cotter hole as well and use the castle nut and washer.. etc.... locknut? threadlocker liquid?

Thanks for the input Guys. I was hope'n to fix it without pulling/replacing the spindle which would be required if any welding (I don't weld) is required. I'm going to try some more washer/nut combinations and maybe rethreading before I throw in the towel and pull the spindle. While I'm ask'n, are the spindles interchangeable, or is there a left and a right?
