Hi all,

Just bought this 8N tractor can you tell me what year it could be from the pictrue. I need to get some parts and need to tell the guy what year it is. It starts but soon quits. Can anyone tell me what can cause that? Could it be alturnator, it squeals?

Thanks for the help,

Burt. From what I can see of your radius rods, you don't have an 8N, but probably a 9N. Henry Ford changed to tubular radius rods I believe sometime before the 8N. Check your serial # then under Research & Info, click on Production Numbers and you will find your answer. Of course through the years the engine may have been changed, so that will only tell you the engine age and not the remainder of the tractor. Good luck. Ron

It has the hallmarks of the 8N. 4-speed tranny? That's an 8N. You need to know if it's a front-mount distributor or a side-mount. For most stuff that's all you need and the year is not a big deal. Side-mount started at serial number 263844. Parts guys like to know the year though. Take the belt of the alternator and try moving the pulley side to side. If it moves it needs bearings or replaced. Run it in to the alternator shop or auto parts store for a test and advise. You might just have a bad or even just a loose belt. It might even be a generator! Is it short and fat like an alternator or is it more like a one-pound can of coffee like a generator?
Common wisdom is that if it runs for one minute and quits the condensor is bad. Change the condensor see what happens. Look at the points they need set and might replace em. Pick up a copy of the FO-4 Shop manual at any farm place or tractor dealer. It will walk you through some troubleshooting steps and help with the maintenance and upkeep. I got the 8N manual from my New Holland dealer and that has some really great and simple troubleshooting procedures. Stuff any ol dirt farmer can do without a bunch of specialty tools or test equipment. Don't even need a voltmeter to troubleshoot like the manual says.

Looks like an 8N to me: running boards, air vent hole in hood, 8N style brake pedals....
Should be a four speed and have a little lever under the right side of the seat to switch from draft control to position control, eight bolts on the rear hubs in a small circle.

Iffn it runs for about 30 seconds and quits check the condensor. The tractor will run for about three minutes on the fuel in the carb bowl. If that is the case then check your fuel filters-- you have three of them: In the tank, above the sediment bowl, in the carb inlet ell.
Pull the plug from the bottom of the carb and see if you have a good flow.

If it runs for about ten minutes then it could be the ignition switch. Next time it stalls out try jumpering the switch and see iffn that fixes your problem.

Squealing alternator won't make it stop running.
It can run all day on the battery. It does mean that your alternator belt might be loose.

Can't tell from that picture what year it is. Can't even be sure it's an 8N. Could be a 9N or 2N. Click the link below to find a year by year synopsis of the changes made to the 9N, 2N and 8N tractors, plus a photographic explanation of where to find the serial number.

The flat spot on the side of the head ubove the
oil filter should show the serial# If the # has a
star or diamond before the # it indicates steel
or cast iron sleeves.good luck
