king kutter bush hog,, any good??

hey guys, just have a quick question on the king kutter hog, I am in the market for a 6 footer to put behind my tn 55, I just sold my 5 footer I used behind my N's,how do you guys think the quality is on this brand,, I did most of the heavy hogging with the 5 footer before I sold it, I am going to buy one but wanted input first , thanks pat

Forgot to add that I had TSC throw in a quart of paint to slop on the mower after I assembled it. Should slow down the rust and didn't take long.

Just bought the 5' KK and tried it out on my '74 Ford 2000.

I'm a newbie at using rotary lift mowers. Just used to under-belly desk garden tractors with perfectly balanced blades.

The KK has a bit of a shutter at low rpm but at the higher cutting rpm, the vibration isn't apparent.

I'm presuming some vibration at low rpm is normal. Right?

thanks guys forthe info, I am going to go fo rit , I did price a "bushhog" brand, and I made up my mind in a hurry, I can wear my KK out in a few yrs and still buy a new one and be ahead of the game, thanks again, I never really felt safe on my hills and pastures with the N but it does a heck of a job with the finish mower, pat

I mow at least once a month.. usually twice a month with my KK 5' rotary cutter. Have done that for over a year now. No problems but a popped shear bolt or two. I have cut everything from 7' weeds, to thick 2-3' grass, thick briars, and probably nearly 2" sapplings ( and rocks, and mounds of dirt, and old lumber and fallen trees.. etc.. ) B;lades have no dings.. gearbox has no leaks, everything is fine.

Unit does appear to be lighter duty than other brands.. but then at half the price.. i was willing to take the chance.

I think you must have your tailwheel adjusted too low if you can't cut lower than 4-5".. this last time I cut my 10 ac this past weekend.. I cut it down to the ground literally.... like a lawn.. couldn't have been much over 2" Only skuffed a couple places. I cut with my tail higher, and the front lower.. cuts great than way for my pasture.. no clogs.. discharges great too.

If you cut often.. even a rough cut mower will get you to 'shaggy lawn' appearance.

Make sure you sharpen the blades every season at least...

Have my tail wheel all the way up, and drag the side rails on the ground. Still cuts over 4" high. Much higher than any other rotary cutter I've used. But I've only used 4 and 5 footers previously. I wonder if KK raises the blade on the 6' model. I think the side rails are higher. But I still think it was a great value. The grass and weeds can't tell the difference between brands!

I forgot to mention...
I dislike the fact that I cannot mow very low to the ground. Even with it skidding on the ground, my cut height is 4-5". Sometimes it would be nice to mow lawn areas but it seems a bit high.

I bought a new Italian manufactured King Kutter, 5 foot brush hog at TSC last year for my 8N. It has chopped through almost everything, I'v thrown it at. I have the most trouble at the end of one field where the honeysuckle has taken over. I have to keep the mower up and make two passes through that. It does a remarkable job on small saplings and pretty good on high weeds. I also mow the lawn along the quarter mile long driveway with it. When I put it down low and go in second gear, it does a better job than my neighbor's Woods finish mower. I had a Ford brush cutter which didn't do as good a job.

I bought a 6 foot about 2 years ago and it seems to be a very good piece of equipment. I would rate it a medium to heavy duty piece after what I have used in the past. It does a good job and is a tough piece of equipment.

I bought my 6 ft KK last yr. Seems to work better in 2 to 4 ft range. I am not happy with in heavy tall grass and weeds like we have in Florida. Have already replaced a imput seal. I dropped the belly pan yesterday because the blades were hitting the deck (it has always cut high 8") and I found the blade support bent with broken welds. I don't ever recall hitting anything hard enough to do that damage. That's why I'm searching to see if anyone else has had any problems.

I would go with the 5 foot model. My 2N loves it but my engine is a little worn, Heavy grasses weigh it down a little, but sapplings are no problem.

We put three new output shafts in my buddys 6'KK the threaded portion of the shaft snaped off. He is only mowing weeds but I think he hits the ground with the blades.

I have a 6' KK. Fair paint job, and it took a while to assemble correctly. But once you use it the first time, you're past that and it's a great pice of equipment. Heavier than a lot of more expensive brands. Will chew through anything. I love mine.

I have had a 5 foot KK brush hog for 20 + years. It has held up very well. I did have to do some welding on the deck and replace the lower oil seal a few years ago but that is probably the norm.

I would say that the KK brush hog is a light to medium duty implement. HTH. Rick H. Ga.

Dunno about the 6 footer, but I have had a 5 footer for a 4-5 years now and it takes all the abuse I toss at it...

If my 8N can push it over, the KK hog will eat it...

Your brush hog is only as good as your gear box and drive shaft. Most of the hogs have sufficient thickness steel decks with cross bracing etc. The gear boxes and drive shafts are bought from a sub-manufacturer and assembled on the final hog. Most are of good quality, so it really boils down to the abuse we give them when we use them ie: leaving them out in the weather to rust, hitting rocks and stumps, trying to mow tall weeds too low with just one pass and bottoming out on a high spot.

From what Ive herd on this board the last few years KK ok ,Woods is good, dont know, I never hog with my 8n . I just use it to plow and disc a few gardens, push snow around in the winter .

I brush hogged " right of ways " for the local Gas Co. , talk about running into garbage, an old piece of carpeting will give you fitts when it gets twisted around everything, a propane torch will melt it and you will soon be on your way , We used Ford and Int. Case tractors, with H D Woods mowers , We always mowed in tandom so if you or your buddy got stuck in a mud hole we could pull one an other out, most of the time .

The KK is as good as the Woods-had both.Difference in price seems to be the Name. Woods is higher.
