I am in the process of doing the rear seals on my N. I put one side together took the tractor for a spin and the hub is slightly loose again. I dont have a torque wrench that heavy. First time I tightened the nut using a 18" pull bar and my 215 lb butt bouncing on it. I dont want to over tighten (if that is even possible) but want to be sure it is tight enough.

Just how much is 450 ft lbs? Thought about using my jack to push up on the bar. Give me some ideas.

TIA
Ron

When testing stems in our valves I have to go to 450 '/# in the horizontal direction. Even with the 3' Snap-on 3/4" drive it gets pretty tough. The worst are the 54" Valves where it is chest high and I only weigh 150#

you should be using 3/4 or 1" drive rachet and they come with 53" handle. let one of those sockets let loose your in for one #ell of a ride to ground and what ever is a around you

Ron,

Here's the way I know most folks try to do it. Divide 450ft-lbs by 215lbs and you get about 2.09 feet which is about 2 feet - 1 inch. Get a cheater bar (pipe that fits around you socket wrench or large crescent wrench handle). Measure 2'1" from the center of the socket up the pipe and that is where you put the center of your arm and gently load the cheater bar by lifting your weight off the ground. Be careful that the socket is on the nut well. Could have a helper push on the socket while attempting this. If you had a 4.5 foot cheater bar load 100 pounds at that point (a little safer).

Dont use the floor jack unless you have a scale or load cell to show the load cause if you strip the threads you'll have a bad day.

Doing some math, you need to put on 10 lbs and get a 2 ft bar. 450 ft/lbs is 450 lbs force at 1 ft or 225 lbs force at 2 ft and so on.

Jerry, with that said. Do I bounce on the bar until it will not turn anymore or just stand till it wont turn?

Thanks

Ron

If it was me and I weighed what you do (I'm close) I would use a piece of pipe so I am pushing down 3 feet from the nut and put as much of my weight on it as I could and still be on my feet.

Based on plain math you could eat a big meal, put on some heavy boots and stand on a point 2' out from the nut and be good.

Ron..... ....yer splittin' hairs....uh....pounds (grin) In the scheme of life, bouncing will add 32 ft/lbs/sec. (force of gravity) but your flesh is gonna act as a shock assorber and negate most of the 32 lbs.

450 ft/lbs is a "BIG GRUNT" and you are NOT gonna strip your axle threads, you might your nuts, though..... ..... Dell, who uses a 5' cheaterbar on his big 8N axle nuts and sez..... worry more about undertight than overtight

Thanks

Ron

I would say that just like lugnuts on a car or any other torque specification, yes, re-torqueing would be advisable....
