I am doing a resto on a '49 M&M UTS. However, I am trying to convert it to 12 v. with an alternator. The years of sitting in a hedge row siezed the bearings in the gen. and I decided to try the conversion. I have the M&M wire harness schematic and rebuilt the harness to the factory diagram. Mounted the alt. put the battery wire to the "+" side of the amp meter, "-" side of the amp meter to the "+" side of the battery. Now for the question: Do you run a wire from the "+" side of the battery to the "feild" terminal with a 1 amp 50 volt diode or to the "stator" terminal. The alternator is a 65 amp Motorcraft "3-wire". If anyone has a drawing or the schematic, I would love to have it.

I have found conversion drawings for 8N's and old cars using a Delco 1 wire, but I am getting confused when I look at the back of the 5 position switch, starter switch and the amp meter and 2 extra lugs on the alternator.

Furthermore, If this works on this tractor, I want to do the same for my '51 UTU-LPG pulling tractor.

Thanks in advance, Qtrhoss.

I have a 1949 ford 8n156002.Just rebuilt engine.I bought an alternator conversion kit.It came with wiring to go from alternator to amp guage then out of amp guage to solenoid of starter. Also a wire from coil to resistor then to switch. Then ithink that a wire needs to go from switch to plus on starter solenoid then starter switch must go to the plus on the solenoid also,I believe I would have a dead short. There was no regulator that came with the kit but there is a rubber grommet covering the r1 and field 2 connections.Nothing in the schematics about a hookup to the field connections. Surely it would need a reference voltage. The schematic diagram which came with my Uni-Point alternator only shows the battery terminal from alternator(one connection only) to amp meter then to plus side of the battery itself. Would that be right?Changing from 6 to 12 volts.will that not overcharge the battery. Or did they not sell me enough things to finish the job?My address is Jerrol D. Smith 5001 highway 27, Chattanooga,Tennessee 37405 please help

I've switched alot of tractors from 6 to 12 volt and had the best results with the single wire Delco Remy. Just run a wire from the selinoid to the amp meter + terminal, - post to alternator, ignition and lights also come off that post. You also switch it to negative ground and switch the wires on your coil. It realy is very easy. Have fun. Keith

The Motorcraft alternator needs an external regulator. To wire it to your moline with amp guage.
Wire the regulator A+ terminal to the battery+

wire the regulator S terminal so it has power only when the ign switch is on.

Wire the regulator F terminal to the alt FLD terminal.

With an amp guage system the regulator I terminal and the alt stator terminal are not used.

Mount the regulator where it is grounded and away from heat and vibration.

I always use the Delco with the internal regulator when converting to an alternator. To excite the field I run a wire, with a diode in the circuit, from the battery side of the coil if it has a distrubitor, to the field. When you turn on the ignition you exite the field. If the diode is not in the circuit you will not be able to turn off the engine as the alternator will be suppling current to the coil after it once starts to charge. The reasion I like Delco is that they are easy to get and cheap to overhaul, $10 or so in parts if the rotor and stator are good.
