UT Exhaust heat Shield?

I am restoring a 1945 UT and am into the sheet metal right now. The hood paint is burned and the metal is distorted from the heat off the exhaust manifold.

I see this same situation on other U's that are farm ready.

Has anyone here been able to make a heat shield to take away the exhaust manifold heat before it collects under the hood and ruins the paint? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, there were bird nests in several places on this tractor. It was parked on a hill on a treeless farm for 8 years. I found many active wasp nests too. Likely could be the source of the heat damage.

see that straw behind the manifold very common to find a birds nest back there could be the start of the fire that ruined the paint on the original hood have this problem on our gas U's often and have learned to check the manifold and valve covers for birds nest

Make sure you set the timing properly. Late timing makes it crank over easy, but you will definately develop too much heat in the exhaust.

I have a UB that the hood was burned above the side panel. After repairing the hood I placed a piece of heat protective material (manifold gasket material) backed up with a piece of aluminum. I"ve pulled a 4 bottom plow many times and paint is still ok. Dale

If it has the older pot belly exhaust manifold on it you may want to think about switching it out with a new style Five star/ m5 style manifold. The pot bellys build up way too much heat in those. It won't be correct for the year of the tractor but will save on sheet metal and paint.

Well yes, it does look like fire damage to me too. The valve cover paint was burned similar so it could have had a fuel fire at some time.

I have the hood at a body shop now to see if they can shrink the metal distortion back to near normal.

Thanks for your perspectives.

I'd say you have a major exhaust leak to cause this kind of damage. Usually it's just the side panel that gets burned.

I agree with wgm. That almost looks like there was a fire under the hood to cause that much damage and distortion. Most of the time they burn through on the side panel because the hood touches the manifold directly.
