My old MF runs great but the injector pump leaks a lot.
A local shop wants $450 to rebuild and $180 to remove and reinstall. Is this reasonable or should I take this one on. My mechanic skills are fair.

Mike, David is right. First thing to do is to CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN the pump and whole surrounding area. Use engine cleaner and watrer until all build-up is off. Then clean with brake parts cleaner until absolutely spotless. Then observe closely with white paper towels in hand and pin point the leak. Post back. If it is the top cover gasket, or the throttle shaft seals, or the cut-off shaft seals, then you are looking at about $5 to fix. But post back for exactly how to proceed. Tom

Hi,
You'll probably have to bite the bullet on this one as far as the repair is concerned. If your leak is from under the top cover they can be removed easily. Pay particular not the linkage positions inside. If the leak is from the body it has to be stripped down and rebuilt and calibrated etc. Removal of the pump is easy. Note the position of the bolts in the sprocket. The engine is assembled with the timing marks in line. You might be lucky and have them line up in a couple of turns or it might take a long time. If you clean the area where the gears engage and clearly mark the point of engagement with a spot of white paint (two on one and one on the other) then will be no mistake in refitting. The pump gear will not turn in the casing. The pump has a master spline and cannot be put back incorrectly. Depending on how much work your tractor has done the timing may need a very slight tweak but refit it first. Good luck
