MF40 tractor with MF34A Loader. The main lift cyl. on the loader leaks at the rod(a lot). It looks to be a threaded on cap on the rod end, with two relatively small flats for a (large) wrench. Are there any hidden tricks here? Any pins or locking mechanism to remove? It looks like the rod seals may fit over the rod end, or will I have to take apart the piston end and slide things on from that end?

I purchased my rod end only repair kit from Avenue Machinery in Abbotsford BC for about $Can55. My local machine shop/hydraulic repair guy said he could have got both the rod end and the piston end parts for the same $ from a hydraulic jobber supplier. The kit I got appears to have a large range of seals, shims etc.probably to cover a range of mfg. dates and changes: use what you need and discard the rest, while he would only order the required parts. I have not jumped into it yet since there never seems to be a time when I don't need the machine! The price of oil may soon put an end to my "maybe tomorrow"s.

if it's leaking around the cap and barrel it's the O ring or if it's leaking at the cap and rod it's a packing or seal in the cap. in eather case pull ram off the loader then unscrew the cap and pull the rod out not hard but it will take some force then at the end of the rod you have a big nut that holds the rod packing pull apart and replace what you need to. it's easy but messey with the little oil left in the ram

Wow! that was fast. I have the rod packing kit as the leak is around the rod. When I take off the large nut at the inside end of the rod, does that packing (or seals, o-rings etc) survive for re-assembly after I have installed the rod packing? Thanks for the info.

it should be ok but as long as you got it apart might be good to replace but it will work if you don't
