Always bleed diesels if you interrupt the fuel system anywhere. It's not always necessary depending upon which injection pump of course. Bosch pumps are more forgiving than Cav pumps. My secret for almost all diesels I have owned is to put an electrical fuel pump in line after the lift pump which I only hook up when I am bleeding say after a filter change. That allows power bleeding which makes for fast work and you don't have to mess with the little hand pump. Sometimes you need to spray a LITTLE ether in the air cleaner to coax it to run long enough to clear the air left in the injector lines. Be careful using ether depending upon which diesel you have. Never use it in a diesel with pre heaters or BOOM!
