MF35 Perkins Blowing Oil out of dipstick. Is there PCV?

My MF35 Perkins Deisel is blowing oil out the dipstick quite badly. Unlike my 8N, the oil fill cap does not allow venting, so where is it supposed to vent? The tractor does burn oil, so it probably has blowby past the rings. It still runs so much stronger than my 8n, that I can't justify a rebuild at this time.

I know how you feel about rebuilds - have a daihatsu Rocky diesel 4X4 that is losing oil pressure. Have found Shell Helix motor oil for older engines to provide a temporary solution.
Don't know if it is avaiable in US or UK but in Austarlia it is available at the local supermarket.

Do you know what additives it might have that makes it better suited for these applications? Most of the oil additives I see to help with worn or smoking engines look like very high viscosity oils in the bottle. Is there something else beside this that this oil you are refering to has?

Thanks for your help, as I don't have the time or money for a rebuild right now.

I agree with Jack. Try for a plugged crankcase vent pipe, common problem.

Hello John -

That blow-by is caused by worn sleeves and rings. There is normally a crankcase vent pipe on the perkins - about 1/2" diameter pipe running from the top front of the valve cover down past the crankshaft pulley. No PCV.

This pipe may be plugged, or the blow-by is just too much for the pipe to handle.

They will run for a long time that way as long as the oil pressure is ok. Messy, but there's usually not a lot of oil blown out to mess up the ground. More goes out the exhaust.

When you do get ready to overhaul, the Perkins is the cheapest and one of the easier ones to overhaul, and parts (Perkins - and MF replacement) are somewhat cheaper here in Canada.

I found the vent pipe, and it had some oil blown out of it although I coundn't tell if it it plugged. I will try to blow out the pipe with my compressor later to see if it helps.

There seems to be some knocking in the valve train, but I am not familiar with small diesels enough to know if it is a problem. I was told that the bottom end had been redone by a previous owner some time back, but I don't see why they wouldn't do the whole engine if they took the time to tear it apart. As I see it, you have to split the tractor and can't just drop the pan to redo the bottom end(It is like the 8n with the pan used as the frame, right?).

IT just has so much more power than my 8n that I can't see how the performance could be diminished.

Thanks for your response.

When they get plugged up 100%, the internal pressure has to go somewhere... watch for a front crankcase seal to blow... take a wire and "dig" out the sludge and nasty stuff...
