This message is a reply to an archived post by 8n 9n on September 17, 2007 at 18:37:58. The original subject was "Looking to start collecting".
i personally collect replica toys of tractor models made prior to 1960 of just about any brand. if i were starting out collecting and wanted to collect as an investment i would focus on nice originals preferably with the box made in and before the 1970s. they tend to cost a little more but there werent as many made and they tend to be more valuable than those made today as the ones today are so mass produced. |

| you have a very valid point. the reproductions are driving down the price of some of the originals. i still see serious collectors around here though paying good money for good originals but it doenst seem to be as prominant as it was. i think it will cycle around as it seems that everything cycles through. now might be the time to try to get more of the good originals. |

| | Travis what you say should be correct, but it's not. Don't know how long you have been collecting. I have been at it about 25 years now. Anything that has been reproduced in the last 10 years has driven down the price on the orginals built in the 60s and 70s. Example: I bought a Farmall 560 built in the 60's in about 1992 for $175 in good condition. I can buy all the 1962 built 560s I want today for 90 to 125 dollars. People are buying the reproductions for less money and no one wants the orginals any longer. Maybe the orginals will go back up but they aren't yet. Gary |

| | Gary, you are quite correct on the originals being affected. I"ve heard the 66 IH tractors from the 1970s are really falling off too. Not surprising to me though with the versions done in the 1990s and more recently again. There are a few tractors where just too many have been made, like the John Deere A, Farmall M & Oliver 770. All are considered classics by most but people will only want to buy so many at a certain price. Just about any Allis-Chalmers toys are doing quite well, the best prices I"ve seen, though I"ve only beeen in it seriously for 9 years. |
