I bought an original Sheppard SD-3 toy tractor on Sunday. The actual R.H. Sheppard company made these toys themselves in 1949 as promotional items for their full-size tractors. It is believed that only 200 were made. I am wondering if any of you farm toy collectors have ever come across one of these toy tractors before. I consider myself to be a farm toy expert, but in my experience I've only found one or two toy guides that even acknowledge the existence of these rare tractors and I've never heard them discussed with any certainty among my fellow experts before. I would be very interested in knowing how many of the original 200 toys are known to exist today.

I don't consider myself to be an expert on farm toys, as at least once a day I learn something I didn't already know. I once heard that the definition of "expert" goes as follows - "Ex' is defined as "former". "Spurt" is defined as a "small drip of water under pressure".

The other definition is "someone who is more than 50 miles from home and is getting paid to make a speech".

Just had to yank your chain - hope you don't mind.

Interesting thought Stan....I say I'm an expert for the most part because it seems all my collector friends come to me for information and at toy shows I normally know more about farm toys than many of the guys who have been doing it for 30 years. I'm not bragging, but I feel that I probably spend more time researching farm toys and learning things than anyone else. I've also got a collection as large many other "experts" and I'm only 22 years old. Anyway I also have a very large collection of full size farm equipment. I've got a John Deere R, John Deere 4020, two Allis All Crop combines, and about 15 other pieces. Also Sheppard does have 2 Ps. I also like Antique Power very much and I read every article in every issue.

Adam,

I had no idea that I was exchanging e-mails with someone of your caliber. I have spent the last 44 years learning about all the things I didn't know when I was 22, and I have a lot more to learn.

Good luck to you.

Stan

I looked back through my listing of Doug Harke articles in both Toy Tractor Times and Toy Farmer, and found no articles written about the Shepard by him in the last 15 years.

I liked the Shepard Diesel (did it have one p or two p's in the name?) back when they were new. Never had one, and never saw one except at the State Fair, I suppose.

I know I've seen articles in Antique Power about the Shepard, but I don't think they mentioned toys.
