Hi Guys,

I see some new names and some of the old ones but I do have a tractor question.

On my '41 A, if I do any work at all, the temp goes up to 200-205. This is even when I'm running it in 85 degree weather. I know the original book indicated running temp should be 190 so I don't want to run this old girl too hot.

I have flushed and back flushed the cooling system and have run it with straight water and currently, 50-50 anti-freeze. I don't know when water pumps were introduced but mine does not have one.

Also, my operator's manuel says to run 40w or even 50w oil when it gets really hot. I live in Kansas so...hot it gets. What are some ideas on oil weight???

Thanks for the replies, Jon Z.

I'd let the oil pressure gauge be my guide. If the pressure is to low, use a higher viscosity oil. If to high, use a lower viscosity oil. The difference between 190 degrees and 200 degrees is about 5%. The temperature gauge is probably not that accurate. I'd just be on the watch for any significant different gauge reading when I'm operating an older tractor.

With 50/50 in it, it will run hotter than straight water. My 43B runs 230 with 50/50 but will run at 200 with straight water. I wouldn't worry about 200-205. As for oil I run 40 weight oil. In hotter weather run 40 or 50 weight.

Hi Jon, I have a 40 A, in the manual it say's to run a minimum of 190. This keeps the plugs from fouling so bad, With todays fuel they don't seem to foul. mine runs at about 185 at all times with no water pump. Does yours have shutters? if so are they open all the way? also have you blown out the cooling fins from front to back and back to front? I run premium unleaded with octane booster and lead additive through mine too, with no major problems after i realized the plugs were not gapped correctly. As for oil, i use 50 weight and live in wisconsin, but only use this tractor during spring ,summer and fall. hope this helps you. good luck Ron
