Drained both sections of the trans housing when I tore the tractor down last year as it had been well over 20 years since it had been done. Now I have everything, short of the mag and the fuel lines, back together. Before I start it, I need to put the fluid back in. Here is my question, how does the oil get back into the trans housing? I know there is one fill port on the back diff. cover, is that the only place I need to put the oil back into? Just want to make sure that the oil gets back into the transmission also. Thanks in advance! I hope my next post is the one that says that it is running!

Wind, Fill the crankcase and rear end to the proper levels with the appropriate fluids and you're good to go. The transmission does not use separate fluids.

OK, so which one does the transmission get the oil from? I am assuming that the trans oil comes from the differential. If it is oiled from the crank case, I will have to watch that level when I first get it started? The oil that came from that section looked pretty thick for crankcase oil.

Wind, The rear end and trans share the same lube. I run GL1 140 weight gear oil in mine, I have to special order it as no one around here stocks it. They say the GL5 oil with hurt some of the old type bushings in these old tractors but alot of people run it and I have not heard a howl of protest about transmissions falling apart. So, pay your money and take your chance ;)

Seen a lot about the lube lately, What is the GL-4 everyone has mentioned? This one is not going to do a lot of pulling, but maybe a small plow sometimes for garden work and an occasional hay rack. Assume the GL stands for gear lube, but what about the 5 is a problem? Detergent or some other additive?

Wind, I found this link to a response in the archives that explains it a little better.

Wind, Supposedly some of the additives may break down certain materials (bronze?) they used to make some of the bushings and such out of.

Thanks so much for all the help B Guy! I'll start doing some looking around and see what I can come up with from the local CO-OP. I have a couple of other sources too. Thanks again.
